What options are available for a friend facing a visa overstay due to hospitalization in Thailand?

I am after a bit of advice regarding a friend who is currently in quarantine hospital and now on an overstay. He entered the country on the 30 day visa exempt and was due to fly out on the last of his 30 days but tested positive to covid on the fit to fly test. He was then sent to a quarantine hotel/ hospital in Bangkok but then due to running out of meds for diabetes was sent to a hospital to finish off his quarantine period. He is aware he's heading for a big overstay but I'm here seeking any advice or options he has to avoid the dreaded stamp in his passport or even reduce the cost when exiting the country?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A person is seeking advice for a friend who is currently in a quarantine hospital in Thailand and faces an imminent overstay on their visa due to being hospitalized for COVID-19. They entered the country on a 30-day visa exemption, but after testing positive, they were moved to a hospital for quarantine as their medication for diabetes ran out. The inquirer is looking for ways to mitigate the consequences of this overstay, including potential options to avoid the overstay stamp in the passport or lessen the financial penalties incurred upon exiting the country. Various comments from the community suggest that while a medical certificate may help, the opportunity for a medical extension needs to be applied for before the overstay begins, leaving limited options to avoid penalties.

I was in the same boat. Unfortunately I had to pay the and get the stamp in the passport even though I had a letter from the hospital. They said I should have come to immigration before I got covid as if I knew I was going to get it. They did say that a friend or hospital staff could have gone to immigration on my behalf though. This might be an option. This was in Bangkok

did you have to pay right away the overstay? what happens if you can't pay it? I am not on overstay lol just curious. Do they let you out of the country?

The overstay fine is 500THB a day, with a maximum of 20K THB. After 90 days of overstay, if you turn yourself in to immigration (by going to the "overstay" desk at international airports or the overstay counter at the borders when they reopen), you will be banned for one year. If you are caught while on overstay, the fine is 5 years.

For people who are 90 day on overstay or more, generally they are taken to an immigration judge where they would get blacklisted for a year, and the fine waived.

Yes he's still in hospital quarantine he has another four days in there. He was put into quarantine on the last day of his 30 day exempt. He has been there under quarantine since Friday last week. I am in Chiang Mai and he is in Bangkok but I could go down there and try and help somehow. I will pass this information on to him see if he can get some help from the hospital staff there first. Thank you James for the help . I will report back

What was his last permission to stay date ?

Is he still in hospital quarantine?

When did he enter the hospital?

If still in hospital..under medical care....

Suggest you ASAP...LIKE TODAY

.....have the doctor/hospital prepare Medical Certificate that he is under COVID care from x date...to now.

....And request Medical Extension for
*****
/90 days...doctor specifies amount of time based on diagnosis and recovery timeline...

...have the Hospital International Department / You...

....Take the Medical Extension request...

....with his passport and passport pics

....to Thai Immigration with letter request from hospital international department to Thai Immigration.

Its worth a try...

I have seen some obtain kindness by Thai Immifration officers and granted without fines.

Good Luck..please report back.

unfortunately for him an extension based on medical reasons (like being hospitalized for covid) has to be applied for BEFORE you start on overstay.

So he's gonna get a 500 baht a day fine for every day past his stamp that he is here before he stamps out and he'll get the overstay stamp in his passport.

There is no way to avoid the stamp OR reduce the fine.

he was told by fellow detainees in the hotel/hospital there is maybe a special extension available but I see he's too late for that. Thank you for the information I hope it does not affect his future trips back here.

@Antony ********
yep, that "special extension" based on inability to travel because of a medical reason needed to be applied for BEFORE he started on overstay ๐Ÿ™

It shouldn't affect him too much at all, believe me he's far from the first foreigner who overstayed.
