Hi everyone!

My girlfriend and I are heading to Thailand in May for 2 months. After some research I understand that, from Canada, there’s two options for us:

1. We could contact the Thai embassy to get a 60 days visa, but I failed to find the right type of visa we need and how to send it. I have trouble understanding the website so if someone could help us it’d really help us please.

2. We could also fly there without visa and then ask for an another 30 days at a local immigration office. BUT we heard that if we don’t have a visa or proof that we wont stay longer than 30 days we could be refused at the border…?

Really don’t know what we should do, what do you guys think?

Thank you so much!!

TLDR : Answer Summary
Two main options exist for Canadians planning to travel to Thailand for 2 months: applying for a 60-day tourist visa through the Thai embassy or entering Thailand without a visa but requesting a 30-day extension at a local immigration office. It's recommended to get a visa before travel for less hassle and better compliance at the border. While many travelers report not being asked for onward travel proof upon entry, airlines may have their own policies requiring such proof. Extensions can be requested locally, but it can involve long wait times.

I am Canadian, arrived mid January, free visa on arrival or what ever they call it, valid for 30 days. Paid an additional 1900 bhat for a extension of 30 days…. Mid March I will do a border run, additional 60 days… did this last winter, stayed for 6 months in total.

@Laura ****
you dont get an additional 60 days with a border run, you get 30.

We went from Canada for 55 days. While we were there, I found out that we could have applied for an extension in Canada before leaving Canada.

Since we were already in Thailand and decided not to go Into another country, we went to the immigration office and paid 1900 baht for a 30 day extension. It was an easy process and it was quickly done. Less than an hour. ( I guess it would depend on how busy the immigration office is that you go to)

, you are mixing up some things. You cannot apply for any extension outside Thailand. You could apply for a tourist (or other) visa before you travel to Thailand. Those are totally different things.

Single Entry Tourist Visa from Thai embassy gives you 60 days stamp upon your entry to Thailand. In comparison, visa-exempt (visa-free) entry gives you 30 days.

30-day extension at the local immigration office adds 30 days to your entry stamp based on tourism (SETV or visa-exempt) once.

The extension can take half day or more of extremely frustrating queuing, get the visa before leaving

Getting a visa is the preferred option. It's cheaper, less hassle, and you can show proof of onward travel within the required period (60 days) which would not be the case for exemption (then it's usually only accepted within the initial 30 days).

We arrived into Bangkok 2 days ago on Australian passports, no visa required for 30 days, like Canadians. We have not been to Thailand for 11 years.

We were not asked to provide any onward travel nor proof of funds. Stamped and thru Immigration in 20 seconds.

Also should add we checked with Scoot in Australia prior to departure, they required no proof of onward travel, so we had no problems in our checkin process at all. Seamless and stress free.

You are highly unlikely to be refused entry flying in to thailand without a visa on a free 30 day entry stamp

BUT

your air carrier may have a policy that says you must show onward travel within the numbers of days you're stamped in for

So if you're not gonna get the single entry tourist visa before you come, CHECK with your air carrier

FIRST go to the thai consulate website in Canada that you would use for the tourist visa.

Depending on where you are in Canada you either use Ottawa OR you use Vancouver.

Read the requirements on their website for the tourist visa

as far as someone helping you, just go thru it step by step, meeting the requirements, uploading the required information and documents and you'll get the visa emailed to you once it's approved.

THEN

Go to the eVisa website make a log in and apply for a tourist visa with these choices;
