The HR officer at my workplace tried to cancel my work permit at the Ministry of Labor, but she was told that I needed to cancel my extension of stay at Immigration first. Anyone have any experience with this? I’ve always thought that the WP had to be cancelled before the extension of stay because the Immigration officer would need to see the papers from MOL.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user inquires about the proper procedure for cancelling a work permit (WP) and extension of stay in Thailand, sharing that their HR officer was instructed to cancel the extension of stay before proceeding with the work permit cancellation at the Ministry of Labor. Comments reveal mixed experiences, with some stating that the work permit should be cancelled first, while others mention that the process requires the Immigration office to see the stamp indicating the last day of stay. There are suggestions for resources on how to cancel a work permit and calls for simplifying the visa process in Thailand.

Thanks. She’s there now and she said the officer needed to see the stamp from Immigration showing my last day here and that they couldn’t cancel the WP in advance.
Strange, you can just walk in and fill out the form to cancel your own work permit. Are you sure they even went to the MOL to do it? A LOT of employers just let people's work permits run out/expire (which is NOT the same as canceling them).
There's a form in the File section of the group that goes over how to cancel your own work permit. It's called Cancel work permit.pdf
