I am a Canadian who will be coming to Chiang Mai in Nov.

I am applying for a SETV for 60 days here in Canada and will need to show proof before I can leave Canada that I have a way out of Thailand after 60 days.

My plan is to stay for 90 then head to vietnam but I have to show proof of leaving after 60.

What is the best way to do this?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A Canadian expat planning to stay in Chiang Mai is applying for a SETV (Single Entry Tourist Visa) valid for 60 days but desires to stay for 90 days before heading to Vietnam. They need to show proof of leaving Thailand after 60 days to leave Canada. Comments suggest booking a flight to Vietnam, as AirAsia and VietJet provide affordable options, or alternatively, getting a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) allowing longer stays without concerns about exit dates.

Good Luck Matt. You have helpful suggestions. I close commenting.

My Brit fiance got a SETV from London and arrived in Thailand last Dec with a return ticket for a 90 days' stay. No question asked. Obviously this is just one person's experience. Best of luck to you.

Some of the cheapest flights to Vietnam are on AirAsia and VietJet Airlines. You can book online (using their websites) and get a good fare if you book in advance. You could also book an AirAsia flight to Yangon, Myanmar, for about 30USD, then just never use the ticket.

And I note that a few weeks ago you were planning on living in Thailand for six months.

Why dont you get the METV Multiple entry Tourist Visa. Will give you 6 months

up to 9 months stay in Thailand. Sounds much better for your purpose.

Matt Landsiedel Get the METV...allows you to do what you are saying you want to do without worry when entering and leaving Thailand...the back to back stays are being closely watched.

I plan to do some travelling now and make my way around SE Asia but will likely come back for another 90 to Thailand

You should be able to show 90 days as the Tourist Visa is 60 days on entry plus available 30 days extension. Have you asked the Canadian Thai Embassy or Consulate?

Multiple entry will cost more money.. so I wouldn't do that if you don't need it.

yes I just got off the phone with them and they said I should be good to leave the country if I have the visa in place before and a flight leaving Thailand before 90 days is up.
