Hi,

just two questions about DTV:

You are allowed to stay 180 days a year and 1 year out of 5 you can extend to 360 days, right?

1. Do a lot of you guys stay longer then 180 days every year and do a visa run then? Does it work? Is it a overstay then?

2. To officially extend to 360 days you need to go to immigration? Any formular 📋 for that?

Thanks in advance

TLDR : Answer Summary
The Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) in Thailand allows individuals to stay for a maximum of 180 days per entry. While there is no limit on the number of entries you can make in a year, the 180-day limitation applies to each individual entry. Some participants suggest using border runs (leaving and re-entering the country) to reset the stay duration and obtain a new 180-day stamp. Although extensions to 360 days are possible at immigration offices, many users report that extensions can be difficult to obtain and recommend border runs as a simpler alternative. It's important to note that overstaying your visa is not recommended, as immigration is known to enforce rules strictly.

That one extension per year is regarding inland extension where you go to immig department within Thailand. If you just keep border runs, you can live full 5 years as well since every stamp you receive is 180 days. There's no limit on number of days.

You're allowed to enter, stay, exit and reenter as you wish without a period of five years and a half. A single stay shouldn't be over 180 continous days, but every time you enter, the clock resets.

Do I still need to go to the immigration every 60 days to file?

The visa is MULTIPLE ENTRY,. means you get on EACH entry a maximum of 180 days of stay.

EACH entry of max 180 days can be extended with another 180 days at local Immigration.

Than you need to leave this country, but there is NO MINIMUM time limit.

You can go and come back the same day and get a NEW max 180 days stay.

Simple said with 1 time leaving Thailand for 5 minutes every 360 days, you can stay almost 6 years in the country.

But to stay almost six years you need an extension of a stay at the moment your visa is already expired, not so sure Immigration will like that.

I know, some people do not like the Immigration rules, but it makes life so much more easy by accepting that Thai Immigration is allowed to make rules.

I agree, but when it is true what a lot of people tell here, Immigration does their best to make extending DTV stay difficult, so they might also do after five and a half year .

Personally I have no experience for extension because I not live in Thailand, but when I asked at Immigration office about possibilities they were very friendly and gave information about what is needed for extension of DTV.

I guess even when it makes lots of dn angry.

Meeting the requirements of the Immigration who will read and check, while you are sitting on the other side of the desk is much more difficult than uploading a bunch of copies.

Avoid problems, go on a border run.

There is no restriction on how many days a year you can spend in Thailand, but without getting an extension the maximum you can stay per entry is 180 days. Even with an extension the maximum you can stay is 360 days, then you must exit the country, as you are only allowed one extension per entry.

Okay 👌🏻 Thanks for your reply.

I thought maximum is 180 days a year 4 of the 5 years staying.

Understand, then it is easier to re entry.

You have a 5 year visa its valid the whole time, but only 180 days maximum each entry.

You have 2 options at 180 days

1. Leave the country and come back. Currently you can just turn around and come back the same day for another 180 day stamp.

Everytime you reenter your 180 days starts from day one again.

2. Extend at immigration. The thing is immigration dont want to deal with it so its best just forget this option and revert to option 1.

Remember the day you enter is the first day even if you enter at 23:59.

The day you leave is day 180.

Each entry stamp you receive is for 180 days. If you leave after 1 month and come back you will receive a new 180 day entry stamp. There is nothing regarding maximum days you can stay a year or how many years over 5, but each stay is maximum 180 days. However, one each entry, you can extend an additional 180 days at your local immigration office. The problem is, to do that you need to update all your paperwork from your original application and bring with you. For some reason. Many immigration offices don’t like to extend and will make it difficult or impossible to do, so many people will leave and then return and just get the new stamp

Yes you technically can apply for a 180 days extension on a DTV at your local immigration, but the requirements are more or less the same as when you applied for the DTV, so most people simply to a border bounce with no formal requirements to get a new 180 days stay. No issues to leave and re-enter for a new 180 days stay as is a multiple entries visa with five years validity.

That the requirements are more or less the same as when you applied does make sense, it still is the same visa also with the same requirements.
