TLDR : Answer Summary
To apply for a Thai ID, you typically need documentation such as a certified copy of your passport, your wife's blue book and ID (if married), and your wedding certificate. It's advisable to check directly with the local Ampur office for specific requirements, as processes may vary. Acquiring a yellow book can often be done simultaneously with applying for the ID. Benefits of having a Thai ID include easier residency proof for various services (like getting utilities on your name) and potential financial savings in emergencies such as hospital stays.
Well, I use it e.g. for check in in a hotel without passport. But a bit more advantage for the yellow house book which you then have for sure. E.g. getting things (car, moped, internet) on your name. The biggest advantage I had was one and a half year ago, when I needed to stay 12 days in a university hospital for Covid. 2 people in the same room had to pay 4,500฿ a day (but where insured as a Tourist) and I had to pay nothing. So saved me 54,000฿. Really need it ? No, but sometimes nice to have.
I check into hotels with my Thai driver's license -- it has my passport number on it -- never an issue.

Ask your Amphur office you do not need to be married it's about proving residency

Same here. I went to get a yellow book and got the Thai ID at the same time. Getting the yellow book was a bit of a process. After that getting the ID required nothing more.

Check with local ampur as normal in Thailand nothings standard did yellow book and ID at same time.
Certified copy of passport (used same copy as for marriage)
Wifes bluebook
Wifes ID
Wedding certificate.
Then needed some paperwork by pu yai ban which we just told him and he went and did it.
Depends what amphur you go to, every office has their own rules, I had to supply all the relevant documents, including birth certificate, and have passport checked at Australian Embassy, it took 2 months for the whole process
