TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the necessity of having a Yellow Book and Thai ID for expats in Thailand. Some users report that they have never needed these documents and have faced no issues over the years, while others have found the process of obtaining them to be tedious and unworthy. Alternative solutions, such as using a Thai driver's license for identification purposes, are recommended.

I researched this quite a bit a couple years ago. Definitely NOT worth it to me. Had to get the yellow book before the ID. The process was fraught with time-consuming hassle and difficulties. Bureaucrats were clueless. Various district offices had wildly-divergent processes to obtain both documents.
I settled for a Thai driver’s license which ended up serving all the purposes I needed (ID, getting the Thai price, bank business, check-in for accommodations, etc.)
P.S. I’ve flourished 17 years in LOS with neither a yellow book nor Thai ID.
Some agencies which can make money off you will try to press you to get them (here’s to you, Isaan Lawyers); but it’s all commercial hype, in my opinion.
