Hi ! I just got the letter and papers from my thai school to go and apply for the ED visa - 15 months. They advise Laos. I plan to go by plane in Vientiane. Anyone experimenting that recently ?

Where can I got the opening time of the thai enbassy visa service in Laos?

And what kind of paper I shall bring to be sure I have everything needed on site.

I heard you can give the paper in the morning and get your visa in the afternoon. Is that correct ?

Well all up to date infos on this will be very helpful to prepare my trip next week.

Thanks you so much for your help 🙏🙏

Ps: any good accomodation tip around the embassy too if you have 🙏👍

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user seeks information on applying for an ED visa at the Thai embassy in Vientiane, Laos. They inquire about the embassy's operating hours, necessary documents for the visa application, the timeline for receiving the visa, and accommodation suggestions nearby. Comments reveal various experiences, including the embassy's peak times, the required paperwork, and tips for quicker processing. It is emphasized that the application can often be submitted in the morning for retrieval the following afternoon, and travelers should arrive early to avoid crowds.

Also available at land borders. I think around 30$ but it seems to be depending on nationality as well.

Yes. Only these countries are visa exempt in Laos:

I was in Vientiane last week renewing my visa, dropping off the application Thursday with a group. Because of the number of people they actually opened early, 7:30 a.m. As I was not there for a B visa rather than a tourist visa (nobody I spoke to was getting an ED visa) I was put in a separate queue and got through more quickly. I was also lucky to have a fairly low queue number, 53, as opposed to others in the same group who took a little longer clearing Immigration at the border and had queue numbers around 350. So get there early.

On a side note: visa run services are no longer allowed to pick up the passports in bulk and distribute them, you must pick up your own passport, following your queue number. Because we had to wait for everyone, we didn't get back to Bangkok until 1:30 a.m.

Okay, what happened to the ED visa program was; some unscrupulous schools were selling ED visas as a means to stay in thailand but not making students study thai. In fact one school had more students enrolled than all the other private schools in the entire country. They had to rent extra room space to meet the per student square meter requirements of the MOE.

Then the MOE re-vamped the requirements for ED visas, and at the same time the immigration office changed their policy on extensions of stays.

Now (at least in bangkok) students turn in a time card, the lesson plan booklet which outlines their last lesson. Granted bad schools can still provide fake stuff, but it's a start..

I remember one student who was out at Chaengwattana with his time card showing he'd been in school the last 3 months BUT his passport showed he was out of the country for 3 weeks!! He was sold a 7 day get outta thailand stamp and told to go to get a new ED visa and start over.

Another school (which shall remain un-named) was telling people either pay 4900baht for the extension and get 90 days, OR pay the 1900baht, get a 15 day extension, the immigration officer will come to the school to make sure you're studying, then you went back and got the remaining 45 days of the 60 day extension.

Its far from perfect, but it IS weeding out schools and students who are gaming the system.

Try booking at this hotel. It's just across the Thai Embassy in Vientiane.

Avoid going to the embassy in Vientian Monday or Thursday morning to drop off your visa. That's the day the visa run companies take people there. So very busy. When I went before I flew into Vientian on monday and went to the consulate Tuesday morning and picked my visa up Wednesday afternoon.

Any tip regarding single / multiple entry ? My school told me than in Laos they don't give the multiple anymore. So that means that I pay 65 dollars the single entry. Then go to Thai immigration to ask for the multiple for 4000 baths. Right ?

If single entry I have to pay 1000 baths each time I travel outside Thailand right ?

If I pay the 4000 baths Is this valid for 8 months (duration on the ministry letter)? Thanks

If you're NOT going in and out of the country a LOT in those 90 days don't waste the money on a multiple re-entry permit (3800baht at the immigration office) instead just by a single re-entry permit when you travel for 1000 baht instead.
Tod *********
@Auré ****
ANY re-entry permit is good only as long as your current admitted until stamp. It won't give you ANY more time on that stamp.

BY that I mean IF you bought a multiple re-entry permit it would expire when your current admitted until stamp would. It's NOT good for a year, it's only good as long as your current stamp is good for

Tod Daniels ok so 4000 baths for 90 days + 60 extension ?
Auré *****

@Tod ********
ok that is what my school said too. So they said I can ask then for a multiple entry re entry permit while in thailand - the one which costs 4000 baths (instead of 1000 baths each time you go out of the country on a single entry visa). My question is how long the multiple re entry permit is valid ? The first 90 days or until I have to go off the country for the renewal of the visa (month 6 or 8 I did not get it for now neither)
Tod *********
When the 90 day stamp you got when you entered on the original ED visa is coming to an end you'd take paperwork from your school to the immigration office and apply for an extension of stay. Students at most schools in bangkok get a 60 day extension. IF you need to exit/re-enter the country during that 60 days you'd need ANOTHER re-entry permit because a re-entry permit is ONLY good for as long as your admitted until stamp is. Every time you get another extension, you'd need another re-entry permit if you're going to leave and come back OR you'd cancel your extension and have to start over
Tod *********
You aren't going to get ANY multi-entry ED visa from a thai consulate in S/E Asia.
Auré *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Tod ********
yeah that is what I mean. I want to be able to travel off the country and quite regularly so what is the best option if they refuse the multi entry in laos?
Tod *********
no it doesn't work like that. You're going to take the paperwork from the school to a thai consulate and get a 90 day single entry ED visa. When you enter the country you'll get stamped in for 90 days. IF you need to exit/re-enter the country during that 90 days you'd need a re-entry permit BUT that permit doesn't let you stay in thailand longer, all it does is keep the original 90 day stamp "alive" so when you come in you get stamped in until that date again.
Tod *********
The reason she said 15 months is that the MOE limited that as the amount of time you can now study the thai language. You go out, get a 90 day single entry ED visa. Then you get extensions of stays (in bangkok usually 60 days at a time). At the 8th month mark you go to the MOE to get tested, then you can continue your extensions to the one year mark BUT after that you need to go back out and get another 90 day single entry ED visa to finish off the last 3 months of the 15 month total.
Amornrat **********
Julia Bassenhoff re student visa it says " each permission not longer than 90days", so they can extend 60days. And the next time 90days. I have seen all kind of scenarios and I do not get the point why they make it so confusing. I have seen Visa 90 days, first extension 60 days, second extension 90 days, next extension 60 days again, than finished, no further extension, get a new visa.....
Julia ************
60 day extensions? Is this outdated?
Auré *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
Thank you for your explanation about all this. It is what the school explained to me yes 👍
Tod *********
Before you could study thai on the same ED visa with extensions for up to 3 years :O, but they limited it a good while back to no more than one year of extensions from the date of entry on your ED visa.

I did it by plane and no problem at all. A great place to stay is Lanis House by the pond. About a 10 minute tuk tuk ride to the embassy and 15-20 from the airport. It's right in the center of the cafe and food area one block from the river.

I wonder what school give 15 month visa? First point to clarify. Second point is, if she plan to fly to Vientiane direct than she has to spend an extra night there.

I once also raised your first question and wondering how it is done in this forum but no one can answer... Following

If you talk about language school, I did it two months ago. Go on day 1, be there around 8am (opens at 8:30am). Check for holidays:

Get the application form in the building on the left. You can take pictures there if you don't have already (2 are needed). Wait in line, fill in the form and drop it off with your passport and the documents from school. Collect your passport the next afternoon at 1pm.
