TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation provides advice for obtaining an education visa (ED visa) in Vientiane, Laos. Key recommendations include going to the Thai consulate during quieter times, avoiding Mondays and Thursdays due to long queues, preparing necessary documents from your school (including application forms, photos, and travel documents), and ensuring you have cash (Laos Kip) for crossing the border. Participants emphasize not being scammed, highlighting the need for proper paperwork, and confirm that bank statements are generally not required for the process at the Vientiane consulate.

If you go on Friday, spend the weekend in VTE and pick up Monday there are no queues... avoid Monday and Thursday... nightmare in the consulate. Oh, and remember that there is an embassy and a consulate... it's the consulate that hands out visas....

F.Y.I.

I was told to make sure I spent all of my Laos Kip before leaving as you can't use it anywhere in Thailand.

So, I spent it all but when I got to the border to cross back into Thailand I needed to purchase a card (11,000 kip) to scan as I walked through the entrance.

We thought it was no problem and headed to the ATM. Little did we know ALL 3 ATM'S were not working and we couldn't get any money.

Be sure you have 11,000 kip to come back into Thailand 😂

Steve Greir lol. Just make sure to have some baht or kip when crossing the border in case the ATM's don't work!

You can pay that in Thai baht. 40bt

Hi Hannelore, I hope your school will give you some assistance with filing out your school paperwork. Here’s a shortlist of what you need.

1. What you bring with you from Thailand—Paperwork from school, including the letter from Ministry of Education. You will also need 2 photos with WHITE background and I would recommend you take those with you. Bring 2 photocopies of your passport because you will need them at Consulate. (Though you will have to go to the copy machine anyway at Consulate to photocopy your Loas tourist visa.) Bring your TM30 and your Departure card TM6 to use when you exit Thailand.

2. To enter Loas you need to fill out a tourist visa application and pay, price depends on your nationality.

3. At Thai Consulate in Vientiane, you can get the form for ED visa application. I would recommend you go before the opening time of 8:30 and not on a Monday or a Friday. Drop off is until 11:00am, and you may be waiting in line for 1-2 hours depending on the day. Pick up is the following afternoon.

There are lots of other tips concerning Travel and accommodations but I don’t know where you are coming from and you may already have that figured out.

Molly is correct. Make sure they are white background!

Don't forget the pic for the Visa on arrival at Laos border too. You will need 3 pics total for the trip.

Great advice Molly.

There is a separate line to get your visa first. It's good for 45 days but I was only there for 3 days.

Don’t forget the tourist visa just to enter Loas will cost you 1500 baht or 35 USD (30-35 depending on your nationality.)

They also charged me $1 in addition because I showed after hours. There are signs that say they do this if you try to cross on holidays, weekends, before and after business hours - 8:30am - 4:30pm. The border crossing hours are 6am-10pm.

My advice is to watch out for scammers.

No sooner did I get out of the taxi and a man approached me said he would review my paperwork.

Then he said oh it's all wrong, I will fix for you for 500 baht.

Scam....

Scam....

Scam....

Your school will have all your paperwork in order!

Don't get scammed!!

I went to Vientiane for ED visa in January. You have to spend at least one night there, as you turn in application in the morning before 11am and must pick it up the following afternoon. What questions do you have in regards to the process? I’m happy to help, and there are a lot of previous posts from others with experience.

Thank you Molly! Is there anything special I have to prepare? Do I have to fill in a paper there? Is there a time you recommend going to line up? Thank you na ka!
Molly *********
Also my school advised me to go there and told me they would not require bank statement.

@Dy**
I don’t think they will ask you. Thai Consulate in Vientiane has generally been said to require less than other Consulates. Others will reply if they were asked for bank statements for ED visa but generally the answer for Vientiane is no.

Thank you Molly. I'll be in my second year ED visa. The first one I got from Penang. End of this month I'll go to Vientiane. Friends of mine got asked for bank statement in Penang and Kota Bharu. I was wondering if they will also ask it in Vientiane

For education visa you just need all your paperwork in order from you school. No bank statement required.

Hey, sorry not to answer your question. I want to ask you instead. Did you submit bank statement with other docs to get ED visa in Vientiane? I nees to make ED visa there as well end of this month. Thanks
