TLDR : Answer Summary
When you apply for an extension on your 90-day Non-O visa, Thai immigration may conduct a house visit to verify your residency. Expect the officials to check your residence by taking photos and asking neighbors about your stay. You will typically receive about 30 minutes' notice before their visit, and the process may involve either an in-person check or, in some cases, a video call to tour your house. It's also noted that if you live in a more rural area, hospitality (like offering food or drinks) may be anticipated by the officers.

they want to make sure the couple is actually living together. Some have been cheating that's probably the reason

strange because the purpose is to verify that the couple actually live together and that has nothing to do with retirement extension

That's the purpose if you're getting an extension based on marriage. A home visit is about whatever they want it to be about.

Turn up ask your neighbours if you really live there, take photos of you in all your rooms and outside of house next to sign with house number on. You will get 30 minutes notice of them coming to check

30 Thai minutes, which may be 30 minutes or 1 hour or “we were delayed so we will come tomorrow “. 😉

We had a long chat with them. I showed the building site, 10 meter further, where we are building a house. They saw my drum kit when they entered our room and the accompanying lady asked whether we needed a singer in the band.

I explained that we aren’t really a band, but just music making family members. 😉
