Hello everybody! I'm currently on a DTV visa, but I married recently and want to switch to a non-o marriage visa. Can somebody tell me if I need to cancel my DTV visa first, before I can apply for a non-o marriage visa? Or I can simply apply for the new visa and my old visa would be automatically cancelled?

Someone here mentioned that only the embassy/consulate who issued you the visa can cancel it. I got my DTV from Laos, Consulate. Do I need to visit Laos again to cancel my DTV visa?

I'll be applying for non-o visa from my home country and not Laos. So making a trip to Laos just to cancel my current DTV visa will be quite a hassle.
Answer summary
The user is currently on a DTV visa and is looking to switch to a non-O marriage visa after recently getting married. They are uncertain if they must cancel their current DTV visa before applying for the new visa or if the application process will automatically cancel the old visa. The conversation includes various opinions, with suggestions for visiting the local immigration office for clarification, the complexity of converting visas within Thailand, and the impracticality of needing to return to Laos to cancel the DTV visa.

You have to cancel the visa to apply for a new visa. However during covid/since covid a visa change was possible. Ask your local immigration office.

Ignore the stupid comments of the haters .... if I was mod, I would simply ban them.

That would probably be the dumbest thing you can do. Keep dtv, if you think leaving every 6 month is a hassle, that marriage visa is much worse. As for the bank account, just use your wife's account. Transfer enough each month from your country into her account. She's going to be spending your money either way. Tell her to go to a different bank and open up an account for you. Tell her not to touch that money. 555

That's why, I want to cancel DTV and get non-o marriage visa. I never said I want to keep two active visas. I'm asking what's the process of cancelling my DTV visa? If it can even be cancelled, and where do I go to cancel it? Can I just apply for a non-o visa and they'll automatically cancel my DTV visa?

My wife's working, pays her own taxes. I can't simply send 100K baht in transfers each month to her, without she having to pay additional taxes. I didn't ask for any advice regarding if I should keep my DTV. I asked if I need to cancel my DTV first before applying to another visa, and if it's possible to cancel it.

Divya Parantap listen, that marriage visa is a nightmare. Figure out how to withdraw money and use it. If your wife us smart enough to make 100k a month then she is smart enough how to move money around. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Us Nek Thanks for your warning, but it's not your concern. If you have no answers for my actual question, regarding how to switch from DTV to non-o visa, please do not comment any further.

Theoretically you should be able to apply to convert to a marriage visa at your local immigration office inside Thailand if you meet the criteria of the visa you are wanting to convert to but it will be up to them if they allow that or not. Your only other option is to try and cancel the DTV and once you have done that apply for another visa that you qualify for.

OP
Graham Seal Because, I'm already married. I want to have Thai bank accounts and don't want to deal with leaving Thailand every 6 months.

I think you can’t cancel the DTV, and no one has managed to do so, if I’m not mistaken. The DTV is valid for 5 years, with each entry allowing 180 days. You can ask with your consulate call them or message them on facebook and I think that if you can stay 181–190 days (which i don’t recommend at it can hamper your future visits to the country), i think, you can try going to immigration, visit their office, and ask them directly. Good luck changing your visa btw it’s really tough to do inside Thailand. Last option is to follow a long process and change via different country
