The Appalachian is not worth the hassle - go Rockies. Them run through Canada.
I would guess Aussies have an easier time then less well-of countries. And likely the same procedures. If we're finger printing one group of people - we are finger printing all groups of people. We are keen to simple block people if they are not liked (Trump's blocked several countries).
I love my country - but you're not missing anything by going to more hospitable countries.

You also get to pay the US visa fees up-front and lose them if rejected. One can get rejected at entry, too, even with a visa.

Most such applicants do get their visas, a lot of 10 year US tourists visas out there even for less developed country citizens. They do have to screen would-be overstayers plus Trump‘s base would be fine to not even allow tourists in. I got some family like that, some of them have never even been on a plane.

Probably not many Aussies overstay in the US to work illegally, but that’s what lots of people want to do. However, it’s possible that some of the more onerous requirements started with the election of the impeached orange Pinocchio. Hope you can do the hike!

If its 3 months or less you wont need a visa. Perhaps consider splitting your trip into 2 with a border run in between if you need 6 months total.

My opinion. If you have a genuine reason to be in thailand long term eg. Spouse, family, work, retiring it's not hard , unless you cant afford it. Which should tell you maybe it's not the best plan.
Australia wont even consider a spouse visa unless you've been cohabiting for at least 2 years prior yet alone a mountain of evidence.How donyou cohabit when apart? 150 000 baht fee just to apply for one with no guarantee and wait up to 6 months to get an answer. Spouse visa here is a piece of cake in comparison.

The Appalachian trail is about 2200 miles, normally takes between 4-6 months to complete. Definitely doable on a 6 months visa, especially with an extension in country. I just wanted to highlight someone complaining about another countries visa application process. We hear a lot of people groan over the 400k/800k baht requirements, exit tickets, what ever. It's not just here though.
