Just went to apply for a visa in Hanoi. First time applying for a Thai tourist visa. I have a US passport. Was asked for printed proof of funds and flight ticket out. When I said I was planning to leave by bicycle, I was also asked for proof of insurance. (Who has insurance?!) Anyway, I obviously didn’t get it but just FYI for anyone planning to do a Hanoi run.

This post serves as a cautionary tale for other travelers and highlights the differing expectations of visa staff in Hanoi.
Thanks for sharing this information. Now we know that in Hanoi the staff can respons on your answer in a different way. If you like the visa, follow their rules.
I don’t believe in insurance—it’s a big money-making scheme. I have not had insurance since college, except for one time I booked a cycling holiday in SE Asia and the tour required it. I tried to use it to make a claim and never got reimbursed, so it was useless.
