Hi all, I need some advice. I'm a Romanian citizen living in Beijing. After 6 years here I wanna travel around SE Asia before leaving Asia, and take my time with it. My Chinese visa ends in April and I booked a one way ticket to Thailand where I plan to stay for about 3 months. Went before and haven't had visa issues, but this time I found out as a foreigner I can only apply for Thai tourist visa in Beijing if my resident permit is still valid upon return (I don't plan to return to Beijing and my resident permit expires in April). Now, I'm not sure what I can do. I can try to come with visa on arrival ( for 15 days) then go to Laos or Myanmar and apply for tourist visa from there? Is it easy to get visa from these countries? What is the procedure? Any info and advice are appreciated, thank you!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user, a Romanian citizen residing in Beijing, is seeking advice on obtaining a Thai tourist visa for an upcoming trip. With their Chinese visa expiring in April and plans to stay in Thailand for three months, they face challenges in securing the visa due to their resident permit's expiration. The discussion reveals that arriving with a visa on arrival (15 days) is feasible, but it's essential to have proof of onward travel, accommodation, and sufficient funds. The consensus recommends traveling to Laos to apply for a single-entry tourist visa, which is easier to obtain and allows for an extension.

Go to Laos. It s the best option.

You would do well to check with the airline you are flying into Thailand on from China and make sure you can fly here on a one way ticket AND you should have proof of onward travel in 15 days, proof of 20K baht or the equivalent in cash and proof of a hotel booking because you could be asked to show those things when stamping into the country on a visa on arrival.

I see. I'll check with the airline, and I'll probably book a flight to Vientiane after 15 days

Any onward ticket problems boarding in Beijing on a single ticket expecting visa on arrival?

@Luke *******
thank you, that's a good reminder

Just be careful how you calculate the days, because they count the arrival date as well as one day, i.e if you arrive on say April 2nd, you will be granted a permission of stay until April 16th (+14). So the ticket should not be past that date.

For VOA in Suvarnabhumi, they will only check that you have a departing ticket within those 15 days. As you walk to the VOA counter, they will have staff that DO check that, so be prepared.

@Ron ******
Suvarnabhumi. But I'll have all the required documents, thank you again

If your coming in via Don Mueang, be sure to carry the cash and have all the requirements Tod has listed.

I see, thank you

I would because they can ask for it and I'm not sure you'll even get boarded in Beijing without it.

@Ron ******
I see, so you recommend booking a flight out of Thailand?

A bank statement is no good. You need the equivalent of 20,000 baht in cash.

A bus ticket sometimes works at Embassys and consulates. I have this feeling though that it isn't going to cut it at Thai immigration in the airports at the visa on arrival desk

Well, I can book a bus to Vientiane and show it as proof that I'm leaving Thailand in 15 days. Will of course book some hotel and have a bank statement with me

Might be prudent to leave Thailand for another leg. Go somewhere else first, get the visa, then do the Thailand gig?
Ron *******
I thought the same but wasn't 100% certain so left it at the onward flight 😂

good point, PLUS people who get visas on arrival are requested by passport control to show the 3 proof ofz (funds, onward travel and a hotel booking) far more than people who skate in on a 30 day visa exempt entry.

The EASIEST and most user friendly thai consulate in the area is the one in Vientiane Lao. You turn in your passport one morning and you pick it up the next afternoon with your visa in it. A single entry tourist visa is 1000baht.

Fly in get a 15 day visa on arrival which will cost you 2000baht, then go to a thai consulate in either Lao or Malaysia and get a single entry tourist visa which will get you stamped in for 60 days and which you could extend for 30 more at the immigration office if you wanted to for 1900baht.
