Whats the best Thai bank that doesn’t freeze accounts? Are Thai nationals accounts being frozen of just foreigners who open with this banks?
Would it be safer to keep money in a place such a Wise or Revolut and then transfer increments only when wanting to take cash out?
Answer summary
The discussion revolves around the safety and reliability of Thai banks for expats, focusing on the risk of account freezes due to KYC (Know Your Customer) policies. Various users share their experiences with banks like Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn Bank (K Bank), and Siam Commercial Bank, noting that account freezes can affect both Thai nationals and foreigners. The consensus suggests that maintaining compliance with bank regulations and visa requirements can mitigate the risk of account issues. Many expats recommend keeping multiple bank accounts and exploring alternatives such as Wise or Revolut for international transfers.

Has anyone here had their Bangkok bank account Frozen that went through the proper channels in the first place to open it? Not through an agent putting the money in for you but you taking all the steps needed to open it in the correct way? When those accounts were frozen a while back I panicked I have two accounts with Bangkok Bank with a fair amount of money in them. I went into the bank because I had a problem with my app the lady that helped me with the app was brilliant. I told her so many accounts being frozen now she said is your account okay? She took my phone looked at something then went into the computer. She handed me my phone back and said your account has not been flagged for review. I have many many friends many have been frozen but they have been because they were opened suspiciously not by taking proper channels. None of those I know that actually put the money in the proper way with the proper Visa has had their account Frozen.
Just move money as you need it, I don't trust Thai banks or immigration. Keep your money invested in the US and pay your taxes in the US. If you're over 50 don't do DTV, you have to pay taxes in Thailand.
Alex Robinson As a foreigner, no one can trust foreign banks and immigration. that is not only Thailand. If I go to your country as foreigner, I surely do not trust your country bank and immigration. You the same if you come to my country. But I surely understand your distrust. 😅
I'm just surprised so many foreigners are ok with being forced to leave 800K in a bank account with no interest, just to be a tool for Thai gov to pay their debt crisis. And the immigration corruption is insane and regional, no one seems to care that you have to hire an agent if you don't want to spend weeks on end dealing with immigration yourself.
I have BB and K Bank Accounts. The only trouble I got with BB was in 2024 when they close my E-Banking app temporarily because I used the phone number from my wife. Brought a receipt from AIS with my name and number on it....problem solved. Account was never frozen.
Wise just emailed today that as of 1 August my home country Wise account will transfer to a Thai Wise account and incur double exchange rates when I tranfer funds in and again when I transfer funds to another country. Did anyone else get this message? Is it best to use Resolut now?
Lindsay Sales I also got that email from wise. It says, from August, customer agreement will changed to Thai wise under Thai law. I am living more than one year, Wise automatically knows that I am living in Thailand. Some changes are here, to be honest, the change is really bad for non o retirement visa holders. They all have Thai bank account. Usually they only use Wise to transfer their money into Thai bank. I also do not need THB account in wise. I already have thai banks, so easier to use Thai banks in Thailand. One thing changed bothers me. If I transfer my money from overseas, where my money is, to my home country, I used Wise to transfer it directly into my home bank account. not from Thailand, but an other country. But now it costs double now. this means, I must pay double now. twice conversion is necessary. but funny thing is, my transfer has nothing to do with Thailand. from another country to an other country. Thailand has nothing to do with this. Why I have to exchange twice??? I think from now, when I do this, I will just use bank transfer. So the cost is almost the same. But bank direct transfer can be unlimited and very fast. Sometimes, wise is not trustful at all. Thanks to Wise. I will transfer via my bank direct wires to send my money to my home country from another country. 😂
Young yeah but the odds of wise or revolut doing it or asking ridiculous questions is far higher than your bricks and mortar bank doing so. At least in the UK. Wise are phasing in some kind of Thai bank account with prompt pay. You have to set your address to Thailand though.
Be aware that Bangkok Bank do have their own unique set of protocols that relate to extending your visa. Very recently have stepped up their game regarding the speed of transfers using Wise or Revolut. Improving slowly.
Krunsri and SCB are decent but their apps are just not up to the level of Kbank and Bangkok Bank,
Consider two accounts. If one happens to be frozen. Because sooner or later one or both will be…
John Kenealy Wise emailed today informing from 1 August my account will transfer from my home country to being a Thai account. They inform this will incur 2 exchange rates - 1 when funds come in and a 2nd when funds go out to another country. Did anyone else get this message or is it another scam? Perhaps Revolut will emerge as preferable?
I have no complaints with SCB however I only transfer what I need for everyday spending. One of my income streams is bank Interest, any money I transfer to Thailand is earning bugger all so I keep the majority offshore.
As far as I can tell, it is completely at the discretion of the Branch Manager (or, in my case, the ASSistant Branch Manager). I had been with Bangkok Bank for 8 years - she decided that I need a Yellow Book and *nothing else would do*. After three months of this sh1t, I withdrew my money and closed the account. Would never go back to Bangkok Bank again, but really, there is little to prevent ANY bank, and for that matter, ANY branch manager applying the KYC rules as and when and how they feel like it. My advice, FWIW, is to have multiple accounts and try not to rely on a single one for visa extension requirements.
Phil Taylor yep..the name on a yellow book was just said to me. It took me 7 weeks to get my account unfrozen in Bangkok (I now live in Hua Hin) I needed Passport, drivers license, resident certificate, lease, house book, landlords id. They also wanted a letter from the embassy, which they dont do, a valid foreign drivers license (which is now expired) and my passport verified. I am lucky I had Krungsri
For the non-Thais, it's totally visa dependant. Many want to keep accounts on visas (or visa exempt) that aren't allowed anymore to have bank accounts.
All banks everywhere thai and foreigner especially if account has not been updated lately within last 2 years at your original branch where you opened the account
I've had two Bangkok Bank accounts for 20 years without any major issues. For the first time ever they did freeze ฿800,000 for four months when I asked for a letter and bank statement to change from a visa exempt entry to a non-immigrant O in February. But it doesn't matter to me since the it has to sit there for five months by law to maintain my one year extension of permission to stay anyway. I was out of the country for 20 months before this, and I used my accounts to pay my lease, bills transfer some funds to my family etc. I had been reading about accounts being frozen, but I just kept depositing and spending on the normal things I spend on, so no issues.
There are no thai banks that guaranteed not to freeze or close your account. Not only bangkok bank, but also all Thai banks which are under Thai central banks and government. If they just suspect your account, just suspect, they can freeze your account at any time. That is the law in Thailand against anti laundry, anti terrorism, anti cyber scam, anti criminals... This is not only in Thailand but also everywhere. since Covid, more stricter now. Unfortunately, all people who opened the bank accounts, already signed and agreed with this rules with banks. Good luck.
The biggest problems with accounts being frozen revolve around Bangkok Bank accounts in pattaya as they got caught up in a situation with mule accounts so are now extra careful, elsewhere Bangkok Bank is no worst than any other bank. And yes Thais get there accounts frozen too
I've used them for years without problems and find them very helpful, but I guess that depends on the branch and the staff. The only oddity I find is the need to request statements in advance for immigration each year.
The freezes have only been temporary until you comply with the requests. I still have an account at Bangkok Bank as they seem to know what immigration wants the best. also Siam Commercial Bank and KBank. I have three banks in the States too. Always good to have a backup!
Pretty sure that unless your account has been flagged by the police the only reason they freeze it is to comply with the regulations that they have to follow and when you correct it by giving them proper proof of mobile telephone number registration they release it. It's a one-time thing, it doesn't happen randomly.
Mark Schultz too positive you think. What if you are outside of Thailand while your bank account is frozen. You can not use any transactions until you go to your bank and cleared it all. But what if you can not come back to Thailand for one month period ? for your urgent personal reason? They will close your account after that. No arguments. The thing is, if your bank account is connected to your visa extension etc... Immigration things. You can not get any of documents form your bank for immigration use. Thai immigration does not care if your bank has closed your account bla bla. no bank documents, no permit. So, your extension will be rejected. Just bank account frozen a while is endurable. but if you are out of Thailand can not come back within the time, or you are unable to manage it for any reason, your stay permit will be rejected by the immigration. Banks are strongly connected to your visa and stay permit in Thailand. 😂
I’ve been here 13 months now and only today had trouble with my Bangkok Bank account an hour and a half to get sorted and all is good (until next time)
same here. When I was an Australian Volunteer Abroad from 1997-2000, I had to open a Savings Account with KTB; and from the 26 years ago I started a 2nd account - with Bangkok Bank (as the active one for all incoming monies from overseas and changed KTB account into a term investment type. Opened a higher interest account with LHB.
I shave had no issues with any of the 3 banks. The banks are frozen if activity spears to be suspect
This isn’t correct. Plenty of people on both retirement and spouse/child visa had their accounts frozen. I’m sure most got them unfrozen after visiting the branch with updated phone number or whatever, but it was still frozen.
so, if an agent opens you an account, to sort out a retirement visa, you would at that point be on a tourist visa. So, don't open and account on a tourist visa and you'll be fine, simple.
changing what story? And if it doesn't effect you, which is clearly does, then why are you so triggered? Miserable septic Democrat, makes sense, you probably onky have a cpuple more years left, why not just enjoy your final years and quit being so miserable?
actually not. They can freeze your account for the reason of KYC, and suspicious transactions. At any time, they can do this, and you already agreed and signed when you opened the account. Just good luck to everyone.
what history? Mate, if your account was frozen because you couldn't walk to the bank and sort it yourself, and you had to pay an agent for your visa because you haven't even saved £10k in your entire life, then that's on you, not me.
of course, if an agent opens an account for you, to sort a visa, then at that given time you would be on a tourist visa...so....I restract my statement, my original comment holds true.....simple
what's wrong? I responded to the comment minutes after, more than two hours ago. Why don't you just admit that an agent opened your account, because you were too lazy or dumb to do it yourself, and it was therefore frozen, leavinf you in a panic as you rely on your pittance savings to survive?
well I've never had anything BUT a tourist Visa or Visa exempt entry in 36 years and with the same bank now 33 years.......Never remotely had account frozen. Always keep it active and lob in £10 via Wise if unused for extended periods. Acknowledge it could happen tomorrow but also all reports I see seem to revolve around Bangkok Bank
Paul Thomas I never said that having a tourist visa means you'll have your account frozen, I just said that if you're not on a tourist visa then you won't have it frozen. I too had only tourist visas and exemptions until recently, and also never had my account frozen.
Actually though, what I said isn't completely true, people on retirement visas set up with accounts open in places like Hua Hin and Pattaya have also had their accounts frozen, they infact were one of the first groups to lose their accounts.
You're right about that, Bangkok Bank seems to be the main culprit, I do what you just said and chuck a few quid in there occasionally just to keep it active.
Michael Winter I agree that I also have a k bank account and they're very good. But that said I've had the Bangkok bank account since 2005 and that I have had zero issues with as well
Michael Winter got big problems with kasikorn after selling my condo. When they wanted me to go back to bkk from Lampang. So I withdraw my 6 millions on the spot, crossed the street and opened an account in Bangkok bank in 10mn, no problem since then.
Miyamoto Musashi me too then suddenly I hit big problems. Had to close my account. Caused me a lot of problems. Think you'll find many xpats are deserting BBK. Cheers 😎⚓
They all can and do freeze your accounts if you don't comply with their KYC policies... Trust me more Thais have had their accounts frozen that foreigners
Paul Anthony McDermott comply with their KYC?? KYC means to the bank, not to the customers. bank must comply with Know your customers. They do it. Not customers do it. If the customers do this, we have to Know Your Bank. KYB. And what actually a customer does for KYC???? A customer already gave all info they needed. And know more what??? do a customer let the bank know how much he paid for bar girls? or what foods he ate today? KYC is for bank, not for customers. If they do not know customers, why they freeze and close customers accounts? What the customers did wrong?? 🤣🤣🤣🤣Bank froze your account to know you better??? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Paul Davies go and look on the banks sites they will tell you.. "Know Your Customer" each bank will have slightly different ones
The big one last year was using agents, nominees to open accounts were getting frozen, as were not being on the correct visa, the days of being on a tourist visa are over
it was dictated by the Bank of Thailand last year that those on tourist visas could no longer open bank accounts so it affects all Thai banks. The DTV is classed as a tourist visa so no Bank account
Steve Wigdel Thailand law does not declare if a tourist can open a thai bank account or not. Rather they leave it on each thai bank regulations. Well, opening a thai bank account as tourists or whatever visa holders is totally legal in Thailand. But all Thai banks do not want to open the account for foreigners. So only bangkok bank did it. But the trigger was last year, in pattaya, a thai bank branch officers opened a lot of mule accounts. thousands something. The cyber gangs opened it with the help of some bank offers in that branch to use it as mule accounts. So, bangkok bank suddenly changed all policies to foreigners, especially tourists, DTV or ED visa holders. They checked all, because thai central bank pressed bangkok bank. so bangkok bank floze and closed foreigners account on tourism or DTV or ED. It is very clear sign of bangkok bank management. They do not want to involve in any foreigners any more. yes changed to unfriendly thai bank towards foreigners.
Ian DelMar it was (also) definitely because the accounts have been frozen due to the wrong visa. My account has also been frozen since I opened it with my DTV.
It's a technical misplanning that the DTV counts as tourist visa but it is what it is
Ian DelMar there were probably a few hundred posts in the various Thai visa and expat HD groups last year about banks, particularly Bangkok Bank, closing accounts when foreigners went in to unfreeze their accounts because the person wasn't on a qualifying visa to continue to have an account. It was a massive issue for many people living in Thailand.
Paul Anthony McDermott I believe the big one was to do with money laundering and associated banking illegalities. Do you have any evidence that these accounts we're frozen due to visa issues?
