Has anyone had issues with money transfers ? I sent money to my GF and she is getting a fee charged by Bangkok bank for receiving a wire transfer into her account. It is concerning have a wire transfer fee when I send and when when she receives. Any advise is appreciated.
Answer summary
The post discusses issues related to money transfer fees when sending money to a Thai bank, particularly through Bangkok Bank. The original poster is concerned about both sending fees and receiving fees charged to their girlfriend's account. The community shares various solutions, including using Wise (formerly TransferWise), Remitly, and alternative banks like Kasikorn and SCB, which reportedly do not charge for incoming transfers in Thai Baht. Suggestions emphasize sending money in Thai currency and exploring different banks known for better transfer rates and lower fees.

I send over 30,000 monthly from the UK using Revolut to Krungthai Bank. Charge last month was 50 thb for a 33,000 transfer. Using Swift.

I was using Bangkok Bank for monthly transfers, I still have the funds for my visa requirements with them.

Bangkok Bank are seriously awful though, I will transfer everything to my Krungthai account after my next visa extension. Krungthai are seriously wonderful, modern, efficient. Outside of any holidays the transfers usually are completed in a couple of minutes. Opening an account and being issued a debit/ATM card, registering on the app all took around 30 minutes.

WISE results in a DOMESTIC transfer so no incoming wire transfer fee. Some of us get fee-free SWIFT transfers from our home-country bank. For me, SWIFT is best overall, and in the 75,000 THB range the net-net is +/- 100 THB. Some of us also get ATM fees reimbursed, and our credit cards have ZERO foreign transaction fees.

SCB has always charged me a fee for incoming wire transfers, even if sent in THB. They don't show it as raining separate fee. They don't even show the original incoming amount. They simply show an amount deposited that I know is lower than the original amount sent. Even if the sender selects to pay all fees.

That’s normal for Bangkok bank and I assume it’s the same for all banks in Thailand. Or maybe they don’t charge a fee but give you a worse rate. Anyway, a lot of people unwise or Revlut or some other method because wire transfers are not economical for regular, relatively small amounts of money.

Bangkok Bank, and as far as I know every Thai bank, charges an incoming Swift wire transfer fee. Bangkok Bank has a minimum and maximum charge of 200 to 500 baht. The outgoing Swift wire charge depends on your bank. With Fidelity it is always free. If your outgoing fee is 0 (or another small fixed amount), because of the
*******
BB charge, small transfers will generally be cheaper with Wise, whereas larger ones, after you hit the 500 baht cap, will be better using Swift, since you will asymptomatically approach the TT rate which is generally better than Wise's *effective* rate (i.e after their charges have been factored in).

Sure I am 100% Certain. You can see from the screenshot, I sent 100,000 THB from Wise and SCB credited 100,000 THB to my account on the 16th. SCB leverage no fees or charges just for receiving funds when the funds are in Thai Baht. There is no "conversion rate" because I am sending Thai Baht. If you send in foreign currency you would have to accept SCB's exchange rate and maybe they would charge a fee. I can't be sure because I always send Thai Baht to SCB, over 12 million in the last 6 months and not once ever have I received anything less than sent nor have I been charged any fee. The exchange rate from AUD to THB happens at wise - SCB do not levy any charge just to receive funds.

Is that because of the way the money is routed? Via a local partner.

My last Wise transfer receipt to Krungsri bank states the banking partner was Kasikorn.

I’m guessing here but wise have pools or local currency reserves and just transfer that locally rather than SWIFT.

김총우 at 400-500k you probl lose 2-300usd easy to do all that, also banks are funny with all crypro transactions, so can also add up the posibility of blocking your money as suspicious and force you to pay them a visit to the branch to unlock it, costing you even more money
김**
김**
Radu-Petruț Dincă they don’t steal from you. They take a nominal fee compared with banks. Can buy usdt which is a stable coin backed by the usd. When ready to send can send via usdt or even SOLana. Which would be a fraction of the fees other companies and banks use.

You don’t know what you’re talking about no body serious deals with crypto? Big Banks and large institutions have mass adopted crypto go read about it. If you think crypto is some pyramid scheme you need to get educated

And to send 400-500k baht or usd. The fee would be well below 100 usd. In fact to transfer and trade 500k baht. The total cost was roughly 25 dollars usd. By the time it hit a Thai bank into cash. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Go into bank and go ask them to send that kind of money overseas. They will ask reason why who it’s for. For your id the recipients id. Then you have to wait 5 days. They will Charge you a percentage for being a bank

Thailand banks are super easy to navigate and withdraw crypto back into cash. Try it sometime.

You have no idea buddy. Go get educated

김총우 Failing to mention which coin, also crypto exchanges coinbase, binance etc. They steal from you once you buy crypto, then every coin has their own transfer fees, also the indtability of all the coins including bitcoin, fees to convert back to fiat. That's why nobody serious deals with crypto unless you are involved with illegal income or a desperate crypto bro that put their life savings into some sht coin and desperately trying to covine people to join the pyramid scheme so they get their cash back.
