What are the rules regarding extensions and 90-day reporting for long-term stays in Thailand?

So just to be clear. You get one 180 day extension in a five year period. So once you use that single extension you cannot get another for the visit if the visa and have to leave within 180 days. Then secondly for the 90 day reporting you only need to do that if you are staying past 90 days . So if you leave the country at 89 days you would be exempt from the reporting ? And then every time you enter it’s automatically 180 consecutive days again you can stay?

TLDR : Answer Summary
In Thailand, it is a common misconception that you only receive one 180-day extension in a five-year period. In fact, you can request an extension every time you enter Thailand, provided you stay for over 179/180 days. However, if you leave the country just before reaching 90 days, you can avoid the 90-day reporting requirement, as you won't be in the country long enough to warrant it. Travelers can enter multiple times within the five-year visa duration, receiving a new 180-day stamp each time, and extensions are available per entry, giving them the option to renew their 180-day stay.

Also you would only need to go through the hassle of reporting TM30 and 90 days if you plan on extending another 180 days in thailand. If you do not plan to extend, TM30 and 90 days reporting is not needed. You just leave the country before 180 days, nobody at airport immigration checks if you have filed TM30 and 90 days report or not during your departure from the country.

Read the rules it's clear, extend once per entry, then you must leave, re enter and repeat.

Correct on the 90 day reports

Incorrect on the other point. You can come and go as often as you wish during thr 5 years. Each time you enter you will get a 180 stamp. If you wish to extend that you can extend each time (not just once during 5 years).

But if you do what you mentioned for avoiding 90 day reports then there wouldn't be an opportunity for an extension because you would get new 180 day entry stamps each time.

With this visa, it might be possible to squeeze almost 6 years out of it by the way. Enter once right before the 5 years is over. Then extend.

Partially correct. You can indeed extend your stay within the country once per entry, meaning you can extend one time but must leave Thailand before being able to extend again.

Anonymous participant 951 what i stated was correct. Read it again

Participant anonyme 951 I don’t think this makes sense. DTV works like a tourist visa METV. If you enter just before expiration date, you probably get 180 days again. But I doubt you can extend, but not sure about it.

Time will tell 😅 You're right on the METV. Let's see which rules apply to the DTV (METV ones or NON ones).

The first part is wrong, you can get one extension per entry. If you want to do the extension that is...

Basically you can leave for 5 days, once a year, during almost 6 years (if you enter the last time, just before your visa expire).

Can you clarify what I think your comment infers. If you leave in your visas fifth year after doing 180 days, plus having obtained a final 180 day extension. Say if you left after say 170 days, then returned before your visa expiry date, then you'd get another 180 days, plus a further 180 day extension, so in fact you'd get nearly six years out of your original five year visa? 🤔

@George ******
yes. That's what people with other multientry visas are doing and I can't see why DTV should be any different.

You get a 180 day extension opportunity every time you stay in the country for over

days. It is not just once in 5 years

You are correct on the 90 day report, if you leave the country every 89 days you would never need to visit immigration

Yes. What means you might never need to file a 90 day report nor request a in country extension during the 5 year period if you travel frequently to other country/ies, just like me. I've been in and out since August, not yet to file any 90 day report and even else request a 180 day in country extension.
