TLDR : Answer Summary
The duration needed to leave Thailand before returning for a refresh stamp after your 180 days can vary. Some expats report that leaving for just a day can reset the 180-day count upon return, while others suggest that staying out for one or two nights may be required at certain borders. Using a visa run agent can allow for immediate returns. It's important to note that specific requirements can differ by border and are often subject to change.

So let me get this straight, you can stay in Thailand for 180 days and then leave for a week and then come back for 170 days in the same calendar year?

@John *****************

@Ted ******
you've done this ?

yes, a few times. Vietnam or Cambodia for a day and the 180 days resets on return.

Does it have to be an overnight stay
@Ted ******
I have been told you can bus it (from Pattaya) to Cambodia early AM, cross to get visa renewed and back to Pattaya in the bus that afternoon.

No overnight stay is needed on this agency border run. This route has been in operation for many years, I first did it in 2003. You will be stamped back in again no questions asked.

Hundreds have. Soon, thousands. You can stay permanently, other than perhaps a day or two per year. But - careful of potential local tax regulations, if you're in the country more than you're not. Usual thing.

180days starts again, I left for 6 weeks and the 180 days restarted on arrival

@Terrence ********
did you still have to pay for your one month extension after 60 days?

It's never been officially specified .

And if it was it would likely change every 5 minutes like how many times per year for a via excemption is allowed .

enter the country with a valid multi-entry visa should not have limits.

Visa exemption also has no limits, but visa exemption is only for normal touristic use, when IO think you do not behave like a tourist, but like somebody who does not want the correct visa for his purpose of visit, he might refuse entry.

Should be yes agreed but there's plenty of things that should and shouldn't be when it comes to visas and Thai immigration ..but that unfortunately doesnt guarantee anything .

Use a visa run agent = immediately come back, otherwise depends on which border.

I don't understand why an agent should be necessary, when I go for shopping outside the country and get back the same day is a valid multi entry visa not enough?

Some are doing it same day. MFA guy said you might have to stay out 1 or 2 nights. Some locations also require a night out at a land border.
