TLDR : Answer Summary
The requirement to leave Thailand after 180 days stems from the visa regulations in place for long-term stays, such as tourist visas. Travelers can either opt for extensions or must exit and re-enter the country to obtain a new entry stamp. Each visa type has specific rules regarding duration of stay, with some allowing only one extension per entry. This system is designed to regulate the length of stay for tourists and ensure compliance with immigration policies.

Okay
@Gintas ***
you seem to not be wrapping your head around how multi-entry visas to thailand work so lets go over a couple different ones for you ๐Ÿ™‚

remember we're talking about VISAS you buy from a thai consulate in another country.

this visa is valid for 6 months from the date it's issued. It's good for unlimited entries of 60 days. Each of those entries can be extended one time by 30 days, then you have to exit/re-enter the country to get a NEW 60 day entry stamp.

There is no obligation to take the 30 day extension in country, you can bounce out/back after 60 days if you want and get a new 60 day entry stamp

this visa is valid for a year from the date it's issued. It's good for unlimited entries of 90 days. When that 90 days runs out you have to exit/re-enter the country to get a NEW 90 day entry stamp

AND

this visa is valid for 5 years from the date it's issued. It's good for unlimited entries of 180 days. Each entry can be extended one time by 180 days, then you have to exit/re-enter the country to get a NEW 180 day stamp.

There is no obligation to take a 180 day extension in country, you can bounce out/back after 180 days if you want and get a new 180 day entry stamp

Maybe because of tax reason? Once you stayed over 180 days in thailand/year you have to pay taxes in thailand?

You may have to leave after 180 days if you donโ€™t do an extension.

But you definitely donโ€™t have to come back ๐Ÿ˜‰.

@Roman ************
I mean, I wanted to stay all 5 years with extensions every 180 days. because immigration will see everything about me anyway, so I don't understand the reason for leaving the country every year
Tod *********
@Gintas ***
that is how the rules for this particular visa were written, not really that much to understand other than that
Tim ***********
@Gintas ***
you can't do that. its the rule. its a tourist visa basically. You have to leave every 180 days, or, extend once per year.
Myles *******
@Gintas ***
its not a residency or longterm visa which is what u need if dont want to leave
Oliver ********
why would anyone not go on holiday at least once per year?
Gintas ****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Oliver *******
because it is not always possible to plan the time exactly every ~180 days
Tod *********
@Gintas ***
so what, don't be a day counter, ๐Ÿ™ EVERY time you re-enter the country you get a new 180 days so you aren't "losing any days" bouncing out and back before your 180 day stamp runs out
Wesley ********
@Gintas ***
but every time you travel in and out, it resets. So you just need to holiday at least ever 180 days.
Dave *****
Why 180 days and not 185 days? Why 5 years not 6? Why anything at all?
Greg ********
Because it is basically a long term tourist visa and no an immigration visa.
Karst ***********
Because that is the ruleโ˜‘๏ธ
Gintas ****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Karst **********
but I see no reason if you go to immigration and they see everything about you
Karst ***********
@Gintas ***
well then go to another country if you dont like it ๐Ÿ™‚ ther're many options possible, many other countries with different visa opportunities. Thailand is Thailand and this is how it works, you either take it or leave it
Tod *********
@Gintas ***
that you see no reason for it doesn't even factor into the equation.

If you don't want to go to immigration then after 180 days bounce out of the country and back
Wannikea *********
Be aware if you do an extension instead of a border bounce at the 180 day mark you may be required to resubmit your paperwork. As it's a new visa and no-one has done an extension, we don't know what to expect from immigration for extensions.
Angelo ***********
@Wannikea ********
Why would it be different than other extensions?
Wannikea *********
@Angelo **********
if you do a non O, ED, OA, extension or many other extensions for example you need to submit paperwork. As I said we don't know how they will handle these extensions, but there was some talk about requiring paperwork.
Greg ********
@Wannikea ********
I just saw the notice about the new Thailand ETA for Visa Exempt entries - starts next year. That will be awkward for Visa Exempt border runners (Not DTV though). Things are definitely tightening up.

@John *********
No idea. I was just having a post lunch coffee and a news article popped up about the ETA. None of my pals had heard of it before either. Piloting with Aussie before roll out
*******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
Andrew *****
@Greg *******
this is for airport's auto gate. Similarly as Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. We just register a day before arrival and use the auto gate for entry without stamps on passport
Greg ********
@Andrew ****
NOT just for airport gates - it applies to land and sea entry too. It if for security and screening and tracking

"In addition, the Ministry is accelerating the implementation of the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, which will be an important tool for screening and tracking the movement of foreigners entering Thailand."
Greg ********
@Andrew ****
One of the items it will facilitate is the auto-gates. I am familiar with Singapore as I lived and worked there for over 10 years. However, the ETA for Thailand will also facilitate te tracking of those coming and going. If they think people are using Visa Exempt to basically live in Thailand ie are not genuine tourists this will make it easier to stop re-entry. The reasons for implementing are NOT only for an auto-gate.
Graham *******
@Greg *******
this kind of thing is start in UK and EU, I guess in Thailand its a pilot and will be extended universally. I think it will also help them with 180 residencies for tax.
Greg ********
@Graham ******
Yes - EU starts soon. UK piloted and fecked up. I always needed one for USA and Aus when visiting. As it is for each land, sea or air entry it will prove awkward for Visa Exempt border runs????
Graham *******
@Greg *******
I guess they do this because it takes time to do background checks at the IMM posts, with this they can do checks in advance and issue alerts to stop people even boarding a flight because without clearance you are going no were. Taking this one step forward they could ask people to get clearance before leaving.
Greg ********
@Graham ******
This is to get clearance before leaving. However, not all countries share that much personal information. UK shares with Aus and USA for example but not with everyone.
Graham *******
@Greg *******
but they are all entering data in to Interpol and Europol. For people already here having to get exit clearance would enable anyone on the run to be caught and those who need to file a tax return
Greg ********
@Graham ******
Tax would be an interesting one too. Singapore and Vietnam have their systems tied. I can remember in Singapore HR having to run to the airport with a signed guarantee that the employees tax would be paid from a large global company I worked for. I also knew of others that could continue working in Singapore but could not leave until they had paid off their back tax - anyway getting too far from DTV subject here
Graham *******
@Greg *******
I worked in Korea for 5 months, just below their threshold.
Greg ********
@Graham ******
In Singapore you put in your return at end of year. Most just pay it off having saved the money or use their bonus. However, you can pay it over a year. Some choose to do this but at the end you are always going to have quite a bit to pay off. I know 2 people who really fecked over this.
Graham *******
@Greg *******
This is something the Farangs are going to have to come to terms with, I am expecting a lot of tears to flow.
Greg ********
@Graham ******
That is a different system from having all conviction information swapped. Those are people currently wanted. Have you not seen the news stories about "Man misses Disney Kids dream holiday for drunk driving conviction" or the Border Control programmes when football hooligan with past convictions stopped entering Oz? That is a different level of information exchange
John **********
@Greg *******
my question was why it would be awkward. I don't think it's any different to other similar schemes across the globe
Greg ********
@John *********
Awkward for visa runners ie border bouncers as it is per entry and not for say a 2 year period like others. So it has to be applied for every entry by land, sea or air ie those trying to stay long term on visa exempt
John **********
@Greg *******
true but I'd assume those people would know they are doing a border bounce
Greg ********
@John *********
This will be centrally controlled though - not down to an individual border IO. It means they can control the number of entries per year on Visa Exempt more easily - at least that is what others are discussing. No idea as I have never been a border bouncer except to change visa types ie from B to a Visa Exempt to get a O
John **********
@Greg *******
I've also only done it once, many years ago. A lot of these discussions are based on conjecture rather than waiting to see what will be put in place
Greg ********
@John *********
Exactly but there is a reason behind the ETA and it does have to be applied for every single entry.
John **********
@Greg *******
I'm sure the reason and the workings will be revealed in due course. I've not seen anything official

so you think it will be better to do a border bounce than to extend after 180 days? because then you won't have to submit documents, but you can stamp every 180d for 5 years?
Wannikea *********
@Gintas ***
exactly. Well just have to wait 5 months to hear what happens when people try extending.
Wannikea *********
Only 1 extension allowed per entry, it's the same for all tourist class visas.

Elite is also a tourist visa class and allows multiple extensions. I'm not sure they couldn't have it allow multiple if they wanted to.

Lee ***********
@Gintas ***
a visa to use over a five year period as per the visa rules, why confused, it's not a 5 year visa to permanently stay, it's a tourist visa
Greg ********
@Gintas ***
Basically it is just a long term tourist visa. Like the METV was for 6 months with multi-entry. The DTV is a 5 year multi-entry
