TLDR : Answer Summary
The requirement to leave Thailand after 180 days stems from the visa regulations in place for long-term stays, such as tourist visas. Travelers can either opt for extensions or must exit and re-enter the country to obtain a new entry stamp. Each visa type has specific rules regarding duration of stay, with some allowing only one extension per entry. This system is designed to regulate the length of stay for tourists and ensure compliance with immigration policies.
this visa is valid for 6 months from the date it's issued. It's good for unlimited entries of 60 days. Each of those entries can be extended one time by 30 days, then you have to exit/re-enter the country to get a NEW 60 day entry stamp.
There is no obligation to take the 30 day extension in country, you can bounce out/back after 60 days if you want and get a new 60 day entry stamp
this visa is valid for a year from the date it's issued. It's good for unlimited entries of 90 days. When that 90 days runs out you have to exit/re-enter the country to get a NEW 90 day entry stamp
this visa is valid for 5 years from the date it's issued. It's good for unlimited entries of 180 days. Each entry can be extended one time by 180 days, then you have to exit/re-enter the country to get a NEW 180 day stamp.

Maybe because of tax reason? Once you stayed over 180 days in thailand/year you have to pay taxes in thailand?
I mean, I wanted to stay all 5 years with extensions every 180 days. because immigration will see everything about me anyway, so I don't understand the reason for leaving the country every year
so what, don't be a day counter, ๐ EVERY time you re-enter the country you get a new 180 days so you aren't "losing any days" bouncing out and back before your 180 day stamp runs out
well then go to another country if you dont like it ๐ ther're many options possible, many other countries with different visa opportunities. Thailand is Thailand and this is how it works, you either take it or leave it
that you see no reason for it doesn't even factor into the equation.
If you don't want to go to immigration then after 180 days bounce out of the country and back

Be aware if you do an extension instead of a border bounce at the 180 day mark you may be required to resubmit your paperwork. As it's a new visa and no-one has done an extension, we don't know what to expect from immigration for extensions.
if you do a non O, ED, OA, extension or many other extensions for example you need to submit paperwork. As I said we don't know how they will handle these extensions, but there was some talk about requiring paperwork.
I just saw the notice about the new Thailand ETA for Visa Exempt entries - starts next year. That will be awkward for Visa Exempt border runners (Not DTV though). Things are definitely tightening up.
No idea. I was just having a post lunch coffee and a news article popped up about the ETA. None of my pals had heard of it before either. Piloting with Aussie before roll out
this is for airport's auto gate. Similarly as Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. We just register a day before arrival and use the auto gate for entry without stamps on passport
NOT just for airport gates - it applies to land and sea entry too. It if for security and screening and tracking
"In addition, the Ministry is accelerating the implementation of the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, which will be an important tool for screening and tracking the movement of foreigners entering Thailand."
One of the items it will facilitate is the auto-gates. I am familiar with Singapore as I lived and worked there for over 10 years. However, the ETA for Thailand will also facilitate te tracking of those coming and going. If they think people are using Visa Exempt to basically live in Thailand ie are not genuine tourists this will make it easier to stop re-entry. The reasons for implementing are NOT only for an auto-gate.
this kind of thing is start in UK and EU, I guess in Thailand its a pilot and will be extended universally. I think it will also help them with 180 residencies for tax.
Yes - EU starts soon. UK piloted and fecked up. I always needed one for USA and Aus when visiting. As it is for each land, sea or air entry it will prove awkward for Visa Exempt border runs????
I guess they do this because it takes time to do background checks at the IMM posts, with this they can do checks in advance and issue alerts to stop people even boarding a flight because without clearance you are going no were. Taking this one step forward they could ask people to get clearance before leaving.
This is to get clearance before leaving. However, not all countries share that much personal information. UK shares with Aus and USA for example but not with everyone.
but they are all entering data in to Interpol and Europol. For people already here having to get exit clearance would enable anyone on the run to be caught and those who need to file a tax return
Tax would be an interesting one too. Singapore and Vietnam have their systems tied. I can remember in Singapore HR having to run to the airport with a signed guarantee that the employees tax would be paid from a large global company I worked for. I also knew of others that could continue working in Singapore but could not leave until they had paid off their back tax - anyway getting too far from DTV subject here
In Singapore you put in your return at end of year. Most just pay it off having saved the money or use their bonus. However, you can pay it over a year. Some choose to do this but at the end you are always going to have quite a bit to pay off. I know 2 people who really fecked over this.
That is a different system from having all conviction information swapped. Those are people currently wanted. Have you not seen the news stories about "Man misses Disney Kids dream holiday for drunk driving conviction" or the Border Control programmes when football hooligan with past convictions stopped entering Oz? That is a different level of information exchange
Awkward for visa runners ie border bouncers as it is per entry and not for say a 2 year period like others. So it has to be applied for every entry by land, sea or air ie those trying to stay long term on visa exempt
This will be centrally controlled though - not down to an individual border IO. It means they can control the number of entries per year on Visa Exempt more easily - at least that is what others are discussing. No idea as I have never been a border bouncer except to change visa types ie from B to a Visa Exempt to get a O
so you think it will be better to do a border bounce than to extend after 180 days? because then you won't have to submit documents, but you can stamp every 180d for 5 years?
