What are the requirements for applying for a DTV visa in Vietnam while transitioning from a Tourist visa in Thailand?

Hello,

I have a bit of a niche situation to ask about, but I'm hoping its relevant to at least some people.

I'm an American living in Korea with more than 500K Baht in a Korean bank account for several years.

My Korean visa will expire next month and, while my bank account won't close, I won't have access to it internationally, therefore I'm planning to move most/all of my funds to a global account like Wise.

I'm planning to go to Thailand on a Tourist visa next month, and then at some point take a trip to Vietnam to apply for the soft power DTV (or Workation, depending on how my freelancing goes) at the embassy there.

My question boils down to, at the point that I apply to the embassy in Vietnam, I would need to show 500K baht in my current (i.e. Wise) account for 3+ months, right? Therefore I should move those funds from my Korean account to that account as soon as possible, and/or expect to do a single visa run to renew my tourist visa to a total of 4 months, right?

Additionally, what kind of proof of income do embassies in Vietnam usually ask for?

Thank you in advance!

TLDR : Answer Summary
An American expat in Korea is planning to move funds to a global account for a DTV visa application in Vietnam, after initially visiting Thailand on a Tourist visa. The advice centers on the necessity of showing 500,000 Baht in a bank account for at least 3 months, typically in an accessible bank account, and the complications regarding Wise as a bank option. Comments suggest applying from Korea rather than waiting to move to Vietnam due to processing backlogs and varying requirements regarding proof of income.

Why are you waiting to apply? There is nothing saying that you have to ever Thailand right after approval. It would be easier to do before you start moving around, trying to figure out how long you need to stay in another country while waiting for approval, and while you've got all the necessary documents.

Apply in korea now. Why wait for vietnam? It's already backlogged there and taking longer than usual to process.

I've gotten mine from Vietnam with 6 months bank statement and my friend got theirs with 1 month bank statement. Approval depends on how fussy the person assessing is to be honest. It's so inconsistent.

I didn't have a job when I applied and they never asked for proof of income. Where as my same friend had to show tax return and write a letter he he recently quit his job to travel

Just print out the document of your bank account before you apply in another country or just apply in Korea.

money in your personal account is mandatory. Wise account may not work.

Wise is normally not accepted because it's not a real bank. You need to have the funds in an actual bank.

Kevin Fogarty For DTV applications, many consulates do, yes. I got mine from London with a Wise statement, and there are reports that Hanoi also accepts it.

Don't think that's the case. I, like hundreds or thousands, had no issues getting the DTV using Wise. If others failed, could be for different reasons, given the denial comes with no reasons.

I have read posts on here where people say they were rejected. Maybe it depends on which embassy you apply to.

Would you have a reference for that, from someone who applied in Vietnam? As people have posted saying they got it with the money only there at the end. They do need 3 months statements, but not the money there for 3 months.

Not all consulates need the money there for 3 months, it is not a requirement. I know some do, and it's useful information to know the ones that do. But if reports are that Hanoi doesn't require this, it's misinformation and not helpful to say it does.

I’m not sure Wise is perceived as an established bank account per se?

It doesn't matter if the consulate you apply at accepts it as proof of funds, which many do.

There are several reports that Vietnam has no minimum funds seasoning requirement, search to confirm that hasn't changed recently but that is how it was. They may want to see 3 months for income but the 500k just has to be there at the end.

Example, Hanoi not needing it. Search in more detail to confirm regarding HCMC if you might apply there.
