What are the reasons for applying for a Covid Visa Extension in Thailand, and how strict are immigration offices with these reasons?

Hey there, I understood from the previous posts, that we are able to apply for a Covid Visa Extention, as we entered with a 60 days tourist visa and already got the 30 days extention.

My question is now: Is the only reason for getting the Covid extention, not to be able to travel or enter the home country? Or could we argue somehow, that the numbers in germany are so high at the moment, that we don't wanna go (as we have a little baby) or something similar...

Or in other words: How strict are the immigration offices at the moment with the reasons for staying?

Maybe there is no answer to my question, but anyways I'm very happy about any kind of help, advice or assessment 🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
The Covid Visa Extension allows individuals who entered Thailand on a Tourist Visa or under Visa Exemptions to remain in the country longer due to travel restrictions. However, eligibility is generally granted only under the criteria of inability to travel, rather than personal reasons. Users have shared that immigration offices are becoming stricter, and it’s advised to gather documentation supporting your case, such as a letter from your embassy indicating a travel restriction. Recent reports show that requirements for the extension may vary by location, and individuals are encouraged to contact their local immigration office for guidance.

The *NEW* 60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COVID-19 is less then a week old, and there is not many reports on what is required to apply for this extension.

1. The only people who can apply for this extension of stay are those who entered on Visa Exempts ("ผ") or Tourist Visas ("TR")

2. I received a report yesterday from Hua Hin about the requirements for this extension of stay. They require:

1. Your passport and:

a. a copy of your data ("picture") page

b. a copy of your most recent visa (if you have one)

c. a copy of your most recent stamp

d. a copy of your departure card

2. A TM30, filed in the immigration office.

3. The forms (each immigration office may have different forms, and want to use their special forms)

4. A letter from your embassy saying you cannot return, OR a print out from your embassy website saying they don’t issue the letters, OR a print out of a letter from the embassy saying they don't issue those letters. NOTE the “OR’s”.

5. 2x passport pictures

6. 1,900 THB Processing fee.

That information was from Hua Hin.

Contact Surat Thani Immigration Office for more information of what they require. Their website is

This is an optional Extension of Stay, and it does not need to be granted.

I can't see a reason to keep this post open. Please try getting this extension of stay, and make a new post letting us know how it went.

Please be warned. Other people's experience before 26Jan could be different now even at the same Immigration office.

Unless you have experience since 26 Jan, please don't share yours.

All you can do is go and ask the immigration office where you are staying. As others have said I wouldn’t argue with them to be honest they don’t care what reason you have. Have you asked the Germany Embassy in Thailand if they can give you a letter to say you can’t go back to Germany.

thanks for your reply! Do you have experience with the offices in Phangan or Samui, or is this your general experience?

You can argue a bad reason and theyll give you it, you can argue a good reason and theyll reject you, its their discretion ultimately, just try and get the extension but be prepared for rejection

What office would you use. Perhaps someone would have direct experience with that one.

we are staying in Koh Phangan. So either here or Koh Samui.

The covid extension is due to unable to travel, not for personal reasons, (however valid). They are now going to be a lot stricter due to the fact that most people CAN travel. Arguing would be the worst thing you could possible do.
