TLDR : Answer Summary
The best way to extend a 60-day visa on arrival in Thailand is to leave the country and re-enter, as there is no possibility of a straightforward 60-day extension. Most commenters agree that you can get a new visa stamp by briefly visiting a neighboring country like Malaysia, with suggestions ranging from spending a couple of nights to a minimum of three, although opinions on minimum stay vary. Some also mention that it’s advisable not to apply for a 30-day extension, which is limited and could raise red flags with immigration.

Do not apply gor the 30 day extension. Cross a border, stay a few days or a week and come back, get another 60 day stamp.

There is no way to extend 60 days. Re-assess your situation

As you will have to leave and re-enter to get your 4 months it is a waste of money and a red flag to Immigration if you take a 30 day extension

I guess you mean a visa exempt entry. There is no option to extend that for 60 days, only 30 days then you must leave. If you have immediate Thai family you can get a 60 days "visit Thai family" extension

Philippe Dupront 2 nights is sufficient. I have already done it. We took a bus from Hua Hin to Krabi so we could visit Kho Phi Phi, then got round trip flights to KL for $83 Cdn. All baggage included. Hotel in the center of KL $49 Cndn total for 2 nights.

All in all a cheap vacation.
