TLDR : Answer Summary
Chinese friends currently in Thailand for a two-week stay can extend their visit for another two weeks. They can either apply for a 7-day extension at the nearest immigration office for 1900 baht or leave Thailand and re-enter to obtain a new Visa on Arrival. Additionally, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some immigration offices may offer emergency extensions or waive fines for those affected.

send 'em to the nearest immigration office to where they stay and have them ask about any "emergency extension" based on the corona virus.

Failing to get that they could get a 7 day application for extension denied stamp for 1900baht.

OR

As people said, fly 'em out and back (they don't hafta fly to china and back just out and back).

Most chinese know they only get 15 day visa on arrival and buy a real tourist visa from a thai consulate in china before they wing their way here if they need to stay longer.

Good Luck

From a post on CHiang Mai News in English.

“Chiang Mai Immigration has launched a Chinese aid center to assist Chinese nationals who are stuck in Chiang Mai due to the Wuhan coronavirus. The center is designed to provide visa advice and other information as well as advice on medical services if any are sick.”

They are doing no more than they did for Europeans when the Volcano erupted in Iceland. They simply waive the fines for overstay due to flight delays at the airport. They don't hand out visas on a whim so people can sit on the beach

Apparently thai gvnmt giving extensions for virus

NO, your information is not correct.

As in every emergency, those stranded at airports get there fines waved but for normal travelers nothing changed.

Please do not mix up.

overstay fines are being waived, if you are at the airport waiting on a flight.

If they flew in with no visa, they should have 30 days. Another 30 days can be got for 1900 baht at immagration office nearest them, anytime before the 1st 30 expires.

not a problem :)

then a 7 day refusal of extension is all they can get without leaving and re-entering for another 15 day VOA

They went to the immigration office in Chiang Mai only give them another 7 days
Ron *******
They can extend if they applied for and got a tourist visa before they arrived.

Chinese get 15 days VOA without applying for a visa in China, they cannot extend at an Immigration office.
Robert *******
Sorry
@Nick *********
not every country is the same.

China is in the most left column, only 15 days and get the Visa on Arrival,

Can they catch a bus up to Mae sai border?

nope chinese can't bounce at Mae Sai.

You have to check this with Myanmar if people with Chinese passport can enter without a visa, the Thai side is on the list to get a new Visa on Arrival. Best is to ask in the Chang Mai groups as more Chinese would make the same run if available
Robert *******
Fly out and back in for a new 15 day Visa on Arrival.
Robert *******
To fly out and back can be as simple as to KL or any other close by destination.
