Thailand's 60-day visa exemption is ending.

New rules take effect September 15, with most qualifying travelers limited to 30 days plus a possible 30-day extension. Country eligibility has also changed.

Answer summary
Thailand's 60-day visa exemption is being replaced with a 30-day exemption starting September 15, with eligibility changes for which countries can benefit. Travelers can also apply for a 30-day extension. This shift has prompted mixed reactions, with concerns over its impact on tourism and the local economy.

That's how long they will keep me hanging around for. Friend did a visa extension, had all the paper work sorted out, and it still took 3 days.

RadiantCamel1017 Hi No, sorry I'm not volunteering.

I'm Meeting freinds in Buri Ram, then we are heading to Khon Kaen, LOEI, Uttaradit, Doi Tao. Mainly trekking and finally we have a 6 week survival course up north in Salawin National Park.

The dates are two weeks wrong either side for when we are close to Chiang Mai.

I did the Mexico Guatemla jungles two years ago. Brazil and Bolivia two years before that.

Phillis Mable Well, by heading to the "Karen areas" it sounds like you're going there to do some volunteering, which is illegal on a visa exemption. Just lay low, get your extension in Mae Sot and remember to keep your passport on you at all times as foreigners are checked along route 12 and route 105. Foreigners are prohibited from traveling east along route 1175 and along parts of route 4003.

OP
You can simply apply for a 30-day extension at immigration on top of your 30-day visa-exempt entry, giving you up to 60 days in total.

Alternatively, you can apply online for a 60-day Tourist Visa (TR) through the e-Visa website, which can then be extended for an additional 30 days in Thailand, giving you up to 90 days in total.

People are overblowing this change, also this has been in the making for close to 1 year, and it has been the standard for 30+ years out of the last 33 years.

Thats ok if you are near an office, I will be heading to the Karen people in the north west. And it is jungle there.

Phillis Mable If there's a Thai Post there we can do it for you. But again the amount of tourists staying more than 30 days in very remote regions is extremely small.

Phillis Mable Go to Mae Sot and don't be ridiculous. Mae Sot is right near the "Karen areas".

Janet Knowles apply for a 60 day tourist visa online. It's an absolute nightmare applying via a phone though. I did mine yesterday and its come back to me today asking for another photo and a pdf of the actual flight ticket and not a screenshot of the Emirates app.

Paul Malcolm thanks we will try that didnt want to do it out there. but dont they realise nobody has tickets anymore.

Yes, it was quite delayed.

This time, they coordinated the timing so the changes would take effect as soon as the eVisa system came back online. It’s actually a nice approach because everyone gets updated at once, rather than having two separate events.

if i come to Thailand by land, with 30 days exempt, can i get extension for that?
RadiantC********
RadiantC********
Leevi Kiviranta I thought they said no extensions (or 7 days only), for land based arrivals.
Nongnuch ********
Nongnuch ********
RadiantCamel1017 that's wrong! For a first exempt-entry you can get a 30 days extension, no matter if you entered by land or by air. However, for a follow up exempt entry, you might only get a 7-days extension. This was the old approach and we still have to see if it applies all the same now, since the exempt stay was reduced from 60 to 30 days

Jimmy Vertenten what makes you say that?
THAI ******************************

OP
@Jimmy **********
This barely impacts 1-2% of tourism.

98-99% of tourism fits within the 30+30 exemption + extension, or simply the 60 day TR.

After 60 days it's only 1-2%.

impacts me I like to go for 2 months at a time.

I like to travel all over, now I think this will be the last time I visit. So that means 2 or 3 times a year with an average spend per trip Β£4,000 without airfares.

Next time I will redo Vietnam and the Philippines.

Phillis Mable so you've only been visiting Thailand since July 2024 when the 30 days was temporarily increased to 60 days?

We have seen decisions made going years back on travel history. Best option is to just apply for TR visas if you plan to stay that long.

OP
Phillis Mable Three stays of two months each adds up to half a year. At that point, you're no longer really talking about tourism, you're effectively using the country as a second residence.

There's nothing wrong with that, and there are long-term visa options specifically designed to make this possible without the constant hassle. But you can't reasonably expect to repeatedly enter as a tourist and effectively make a country your second home without eventually applying for the appropriate visa.

It's also worth putting this into perspective. Vietnam offers 45 days visa-free, but you can't simply extend that stay in-country, while the Philippines offers 30 days initially. So if you're planning to spend several months at a time in these countries, you're going to be dealing with visas or extensions either way.

well it isnt the only business sector that's no longer interested in long time, and they'll find out what it means when they add up the dollars instead of the arrivals

Jimmy Vertenten 100%. I wont be staying for over 30 days again. I've had an absolute nightmare with the 60 day visa. So when 30 is coming to an end I will spend the extra 20-30 days in Vietnam. I think that is going to become quiet popular now.

anyway, as i said, Thailand became a cheaper destination as three weeks costs less than six

Arrivals will increase from these changes if that's what they are counting, as the exception was reduced so it will require visa runs, or border bounces by that same 1-2%.
