I have booked my flight to Thailand for 120 days a few weeks ago, only to realise that visa exemption rules have changed from 60 to 30 days.

I was thinking of applying for a 60 day visa back home in the UK, and on day 59-60, travel for a week by air to a neighbouring country, arrive back to Thailand and get a 30 day exception visa, then extend for 30 days at immigration office.

Will this cause any problems with immigration, as this is the slight cheaper option, or would you apply for a 6 month multi-visiting visa?

Any feed back appreciated.
Answer summary
The user is seeking advice on how to stay in Thailand for 120 days after realizing that visa exemption rules have changed from 60 to 30 days. They contemplate applying for a 60-day visa and then re-entering Thailand for a 30-day visa exemption, extending it for another 30 days. Comments from the community suggest applying for a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) for more flexibility, highlighting potential complications with the user's current plan and emphasizing that the METV, though more costly, might be a safer option to avoid immigration issues.

The safest is to get the METV - can come and go as often as you want within the 120 days, but you will need to show your exit and reentry plans for first entrance and maybe second entrance.

yes the METV will cost a little more, but saves you the time and trouble to get extension and any issue with entering a second time.

If you go with other plan, you could either extend the 60 by 30 or the 30 by 30. I might consider extending the 60 unless you have reason to leave after the 60 instead of after 90. I can see a lot more issues with the second entry if for more than 30 days (having the flight out after 30 days may help get in).

Don’t you have to fly to native country as opposed to a “neighbouring country “?

Paul no, it doesn't really materially matter where you go once you leave Thailand. Thailand doesn't ultimately know what you do when you are out of the country. The issue is more about frequency of visits and how long you stay cumulatively.

That's exactly the behavior the changes to the visa exemption program is trying to put a stop to. Stop being a cheap Charlie and get a proper METV visa.

That will work if you've no other recent history in Thailand but if you have the visa exempt might be an issue. The Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) would be a better option

Yeah, METV is smooth and easy if you've got the funds. Just came in last night and the IO didn't bat an eyelid despite a long history. Soooo nice to be confident going through that line instead of sweating bullets thinking your year is about to be turned on its head.

สเปนเซอร์ ริตเตอร์ I was nearly denied entry with a METV last October with my long entry history as a tourist, it ALWAYS depends from the IO you are in front of. You have been lucky , the IO was tired of the long working day probably 555

Jeff Hoffmeister Thanks for trying to be helpful. I believe that a 90 day visa is for business trips and 60 day visa is a tourist visa. Having looked at all the reviews, which have been helpful, I think I shall apply for a METV.

Or get yourself a METV multi entry tourist visa. That is a 6 month visa. But you can only stay in the country for 60 days straight. So visit a neighbor country for a weekend and come back to Thailand.
