Just caught wind of the recent news flying around about changes to DTV requirements as of the 31st (Applying with the Embassy in the country you're a resident of and criminal record check). I'm going to be looking into it tomorrow, but has this been concretely confirmed?

If it has been, it still seems to be a bit unclear with what they mean when they say apply with the embassy you're a resident of. As in fly back to Canada from Chiang Mai just to apply, or simply leave to a neighbouring country and apply specifically online with the Canadian Thai Embassy?

And I guess RIP if I need a criminal record check. That would mean a mandatory trip back to Canada 🫤
Answer summary
Recent changes to the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) application process require applicants to apply through a Thai embassy in their country of citizenship or permanent residence. This includes a mandatory criminal record check, which must be obtained in the applicant's home country. The requirement means that applicants cannot apply from Thailand or nearby countries like Vietnam or Laos. Comments confirm the need for physical presence in the home country when applying, and there's a consensus on the challenges these changes pose for many expats currently in Thailand.

For those also acronym challenged.

The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is a 5-year multiple-entry visa designed for digital nomads, remote workers, freelancers, and participants in "soft power" activities (such as Muay Thai training, Thai cooking courses, or medical treatments).

Key details:

Duration: Valid for 5 years with multiple entries, allowing stays of up to 180 days per entry (extendable once in-country for another 180 days).

Work rules: You can work remotely for foreign employers or foreign clients, but local Thai employment is strictly prohibited.

Financial requirement: Must show proof of at least 500,000 THB (~$14,500 USD) in savings.

Dependents: DTV holders can bring a legal spouse and unmarried children under age 20.

Only one reason is Thailand don't want people to go Vietnam because they know that Vietnam is much better and people going there often stay there instead to go Thailand back.

Ruairidh ******************
Michael Villin I don't understand your point. This change will surely make more people choose vietnam as a base instead of thailand. I've been studying in Thailand and plan to get the DTV (i just need to go back to my home country now 🙃) but I'm travelling in vietnam now and there's many many amazing places which would be very nice to stay as a backup option.

Someone said "doesn't staying in a country, with a rental contract and bills to that address, but not their passport country, count as "residing".

No, it does not. It has to be a government body issued document (like ID) that states whatever all IDs say.

I spent 5 times 3 months in the US (business), on no any visa (Australians do not need any for 3 months stay) and I had never had any document to satisfy this "residence" requirement.

So Ryan, it is all concretely confirmed, you will have to apply from Canada and even if you are applying from your home country, you will be asked for proof of location( they were asking for proof of location also before they made the changes), and yes, you will also need a criminal record

You always have to be in the country where you apply and stay there until the process is done. They are now limiting the country you are applying from to your home country as citizen or permanent resident.

Adrian Bursill Why do a lot of Malaysian visit markets and shopping centers in the South of Thailand when it was cheaper in their own country?

My personal experience is that Malaysia is more expensive.

When you lived for 30 years in Thailand and think the other countries are a better place, the new rules won't effect you, because DTV is not for you anyway, and I expect you don't want to live in Thailand anymore.

Luit van der Linde I just spent 3 months in Malaysia. 30 years ago it was more expensive, now Malaysia is cheaper unless you drink alcohol.

Most Malaysian men I chatted to all said the same they go to Thailand to drink and play around. Even the muslim ones who like a drink from time to time.

Also fashion is lacking in Malaysia. For food, cigarettes, electric, fuel daily living costs are way cheaper there. Imported good are also cheaper. The government seem to care about their people more.

I was saying that for a long time. When someone applies in a neighboring country after residing in Thailand for years on visa-exempt entries, the intention to live in Thailand permanently is evident. The DTV visa is not meant for residing in Thailand permanently all year around.

The new requirement for the DTV is that you can ONLY apply through a Thai embassy that is in your country of citizenship or country of permanent residence.

You would need to be physically inside of the country you are either a citizen of, or a permanent resident of as this is a base requirement of the e-visa system. You must be within the jurisdiction of a Thai embassy to apply through that Thai embassy.

they have many ways, we've already seen a lot of it in places like Vietnam.

Random interviews, a week after applying asking for every page in your passport including a verifiable date, a receipt from a shop in the country, a newspaper, etc.

Earlier this year someone in the UK got summoned to an interview the next day and they had to rush and book a train across the country to London.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
Elías Molina Maybe you get no stamp when you get in your home country, but when you have an entry stamp for Thailand, they just might to ask you to proof you are not in Thailand anymore.

But apart from passport, there are a lot of other kinds of proof the can ask, like recent ATM visit, paying in a shop.

The requirement for a police certificate about criminal record normally has to be don in the country too, so you need to be there anyway.
Ivan ************
Ivan ************
Elías Molina what exactly they ask depends on the consulate but they do often ask for things that would be hard to fake if you aren't actually there. UK for example wants a paid ticket from the UK or Ireland back TO Thailand, along with proof of address. I guess you could fake it, nothing is 100% and there are reports from people who did pull a fast one or left before they got the visa. But consulates do ask for various evidence for this.
Brandon ************
Brandon ************
@Elías *******
that's not what they're looking for. They're looking for stamps from other countries showing you traveled there. You can't enter Thailand without getting a stamp. And many other countries give stamps too. If they see you entered a country a week ago they're going to question you and ask for more proof that you're actually where you say you are.
Elías ********
Elías ********
@Brandon ***********
I must say 99% of the countries do not stamp or write anything in the passport when a national or PR holder leaves or enters the country. So in that case, showing all the pages won't do anything.
