Answer summary
Recent changes to the Thai visa application process now require applicants to provide proof of permanent residence in their country of residence instead of proof of current location. This has caused some confusion among digital nomads and expatriates about where they can apply for their visas. The conversation highlights various perspectives on applying from different countries, the implications for those with temporary residency, and how interviews are now a common requirement to prevent fraudulent applications.

This whole thing seems to undermine the notion of “nomad” in “digital nomad.”
Wondering if this is a nudge away from DTVers (like me) who plan to be in Thailand for all 5 years of my visa, in favor of people who just come and go for a few weeks at a time (and have a home to get back to).
So I have sold my property, deregistered and I do not have permanent residence in my country. So what now? I cannot apply. It is not written that you must be resident/have permanent residency.. so most of digital nomads cannot apply.
This is from the London. Embassy :The new DTV change from 31 August 2026 replaces the old “proof of current location” document with proof of permanent residence in the UK/Ireland/British Overseas Territories
I got Italian passport but I’m a permanent resident in the UK I will have to apply from the London Embassy.
I could not apply from the Italian one even been an Italian citizen as my registered residence is the UK not Italy.
If you check they ask you to provide your residence status
Separate from DTV rules, e-visa requires you to be in the physical location of that embassy (for all visa applications). Now with this added element, that you can only apply from your “home” country coupled with the general requirement of physically being in the jurisdiction, you now have to travel home to apply
Oh, that is very interesting! If you can apply from outside the country, you are a national or a permanent resident there. It would be very interesting to see how this works out!
