What are the new banking rules affecting Thai wife visa extensions and why are funds being blocked?

Alert!: Thai wife visa: I just extended it, with, as usual, the 400k on my bank account. Bangkok Bank says they will block it for 6 months! Indeed, I see I cannot use the 400k! But I read nothing about this new rule in the immigration website! Any idea? Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user experiences issues with their Thai wife visa extension due to Bangkok Bank's new policy of blocking funds for six months after depositing the 400,000 THB required for the visa. While the user believes this rule may relate to immigration, many commenters clarify that it is primarily a banking regulation enforced by Bangkok Bank. They suggest exploring other banks due to this issue. Some discussions also touch on broader concerns about Thailand's immigration policies and general treatment of expats.

had my visa extended yesterday at immigration office and there was a note in passport from immigration to keep the 800.000 k in till 2 October . Had to have it in 2 months before makes it a total of 5 months .

the rules state that and must never be below 400,000. They are the rules 800,000 2 months before and 3 months after and never below 400,000.

@Tim *******
I didn't realise that until yesterday .

Hospitals are owed millions of baht from foreigners not paying and the system is getting tighter. It's a bank requirement not government, the banks are fkn us all ways. YouTube Thailand Truth Talks it tells you what thai gov and banks are up to. Not good!

Being in love loving someone and marrying someone shouldn't require an absurd amount of money in an account in either country. This is another reason why not to go to Thailand now. Besides with all of the deadly parasites and things that can bite you for just simply wearing sandals causing organ failure it's really just not worth staying here the government can't figure out what it wants to do because of a military coup. Sadly marrying in Thailand and trying to stay there is completely impossible it's almost like the country pimps out its own women using its immigration policy. Unfortunately this is why I think it's best that we start going elsewhere in Southeast Asia until Thailand can get it stuff together

6 months of 4 months?

If you use the cashless payments andyou haven't certified your phone number with your bank ,they lock them down untile you certify your phone number. They are cracking down on cyber theft

This appears to be something else

that is my experience too. But I didn’t use an agent to grease the wheels all my accounts are 100% legitimate. I have multiple bank accounts with 4 different banks. If one of the banks decided to change the way they do business I would just move my money around.

Isn’t that just good planning?

@Andy *******
which bank would you suggest for ease of wise transfers, app, immigration requirements, etc? I have Bangkok bank now but will look into switching if they start freezing my money that long.

The goal of that banked money is to be a reserve for expenses (medical, emergency travel, family emergency). If the banks block the funds, what's the point of having it at all. Get hit by a bus and can't pay the medical expenses because the bank has a hold on your funds?
John **************
@Tony *********
they don’t block more than the amount for the Visa based on my research. Simply do it the right way and or open separate account for just that amt.
Tony **********
@John *************
you're missing my point. What if you have a medical need and funds are blocked?
Richard ***********

insurance ?

@Tony *********
then they should have that in a backup account.

Thai medical cost is pretty low.

I haven't arrived in Thailand yet, but what is the correct way to open an account? How many accounts are you supposed to have?
John **************
@Natalie *********
personally I would use an agent to help you, and have your 400-800k THB equivalent in a bank where you live. An agent can help you navigate the process.

There is a You Tube channel I follow regularly that does Lives every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. Monday is all about Crypto but Saturday is ALL about retiring in Thailand. Wednesday is open discussion.

“Coopers Thai Adventure “

They are straight shooters and I have met them.

Feel free to DM me if you have questions
Alex *******
Thats crazy to block your money when there is no law saying they should.
John **************
@Alex ******
banks are for profit and usually private companies so no law but THEIR rules.
Leslie *******
It a another way to make more money from foreigners.same at the fee for ATM.
Abu ********
Banks have no right to block any accounts until an order from government authorities or court. Moreover, it's not an immigration direction either.
Abu ********
@Leslie ******
, exactly! It's an explotation and torture only! Thank you.
John **************
@Leslie ******
how? Any bank in any country will do the same thing as in use deposits to earn interest for themselves, it simple banking 101.

you're knocking your head against the wall on this one. Most "expats" want to believe that everything done here is some conspiracy to extract every last baht from them, or to make things so difficult for them, they leave the country with all their money. They're generally the same people who cry about immigrants and open borders in the western countries they left. Their lack of critical thinking and detachment from reality really is quite something

Thailand is a mess. A complete clusterfuck and has been for at least a decade. I cannot comment pre 2013 but I heard it was way better than when I first visited in 2013. Since then its rapidly dropped in standards. The food is spot on, the beaches mint . . . everything else has just gone down the shitter
John ********
@Wayne ******
So Bye-Bye to you mate.
John **************
biggest issue is really all the new Expats trying to cheat the system they have in place.

People forget that this is Their Country and you can choose to not follow the rules but there are consequences.

What is soooo DAMN hard about doing things the right way?

I mean really!

the food is not even spot on. The produce and meat are substandard and the cooks just crank it out asap. They don't even want to cook. It is okay at best.
Wayne *******

Yeah true dietary wise its not great but Im just comparing it regionally. I like food in Nam too but Thai food is the best 'cuisine' in the region in my opinion.

Ive been considering different visas but I dont think Im gonna give myself the hassle and just use Thailand as a break now and then. Its full of knobheads as well, both foreign and Thai
Richard ***********
@Wayne ******
mostly foreign don’t really meet many knobhead Thais except some crazy girls ha

This is a Bangkok Bank rule. My local branch received a letter from their central office last week setting out the new rules. It applies to people with 800k balances as well.

I don't know if other banks have decided to do similar.
John *******
Looks like they have caught on to people using an agent to bank the money.
Jeff *******
@John ******
Agents rarely supply money for marriage visas as you yourself can legitimately take it out next day. (albeit apparently not now with bkk bank) Will be a massive game changer if they start doing this for retirement visas, the place will be dead with the mass of deportations 😁
Michael *********
@Jeff ******
$11,782 will cause mass deportations?
Richard ***********

most people here living on a tight budget I know a lot Thailand is killing itself I feel sorry for the girls

Did you ask the bank to explain what was the problem

This has nothing to do with immigration. This is a bank thing. Suggest you look into changing banks.
