What are the implications of Thailand's app for tourists regarding privacy and COVID-19 tracking?

I just come back from uk too. I think mainly Thai people have an app called Thai cha na that track them where have they been. It easyer too make sure that you been in a covid area or not.

I don't see this working well since most short-term tourist don't get a Thai phone but just use wifi. Even a spouse would have to have their own Thai phone. The biggest source of cases in Thailand have come from Burmese migrant workers, legal and illegal, so you know all of them aren't going to have smart phones.

Just buy a new phone before you come to thailand so their no history on your phone. Just a I dear.

I think every country should have done this from the get go.

Contact tracing is one of the main reason Thailand has been able to contain covid. This was evident in how they contained the spread in Samut Sakon. I hope all who try to cheat the system are caught and deported.

It’s not a bad idea - it allows them to track virus outbreaks and isolate quickly - they can walk back the spreader and isolate when called for ... the mixture of this and virus Passports will help keep the kingdom Safe and open up some sectors quickly ...we are guests of the king and should do as our hosts ask ... seems simple , bitching about it seems entitled and out of touch with Thailand and it’s fundamentally cooperative sangha nature and structure ... if one does not like the rules one doesn’t need to stay and complain - there are other places to visit ...

Personally, I’m ok with it. On Thanksgiving Day, I helped a homeless man who then told me he had tested positive for COVID. I called medical services for him, but I then could not track down if his story was true or if he was just trying to get shelter for the night, as the medic implied to me (turns out that his story was likely true, but no need for details). Anyway, I was needing to quarantine until I could find out. It was a royal pain. I would have much preferred a method where they could have tracked me down because I had been in touch with him and he tested positive.

I protect certain aspects of my privacy, but I recognize that much of it is already exposed. If the government wants to track where I am for contact tracing and to be able to reach me if I’m exposed to someone with COVID, I’m very ok with it. Google maps is already tracing me. They can even feel free to use it for future marketing plans.

All those saying we are already being tracked . Makes you wonder why they need an app then

This is only for tourists arriving in the country now. People here can still bumble along with Thai Chana which hardly anywhere enforces. So a lot of fuss about nothing

I came to the conclusion I was too late to care about privacy after Edward Snowden came out the closet and I realized I did not give a crap about anything that he risked life to reveal. I already opt-in everywhere to get relevant ads. I will gladly opt-in if it helps save a life.
