TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses the emergence of a new COVID variant in relation to tourism and immigration policies in Thailand. Participants express concern about the potential spread of the virus among tourists and the government's response. Some voices downplay the severity of the variant, while others highlight real impacts on travel and public health. Current updates suggest that while the variant is more transmissible, it may not lead to more severe cases or deaths.

no deaths in over 2 weeks and more data shows it’s mild. Meanwhile with delta Bangkok had people dying in the streets before they could reach hospital. Not even Singapore closed down due to omicron so nearly no chance Thailand will.

Luckily the news from South Africa seems to suggest that it's more transmissible but not causing anymore severe cases/deaths so same but different? Hopefully no need to panic?

that’s common sense you’re talking…politicians are awkward lacking that

People still believe this stuff? Really? Turn off the T-V and watch it all go away...

Countries are doing travel bans based on this dumb variant. If your little country gets a ban, does turning off the TV and being woke still work?

the bans are pretty stupid. They discourage scientists, or the governments scientists are in, from announcing their findings when an issue is found. Just because the new variant was found in Africa, does not mean it started there nor that it is even close to being isolated there (which it already was not). It only means S. Africa had great scientists who identified it.

tell that to relatives and friends of the dead. Are you for real?

This variant is gonna spread because it's covid, covid spreads ,treating it like some kinda monster when it's just mild is stupid

how many mutations before we get one that isn’t so mild?

We’re fine today so let’s not worry about it, kind of a silly plan
Tina ******
@Joseph *****
mild? People said the same time with delta & it killed 473K alone in India
Joseph ******
@Tina *****
all the evidence is pointing that way and also it's been 2 years , time to move on with life. What do you want ? For us to worry about this and restrictions til we die ? Great life and future there, everyone can make their own personal risk choices now, vaccines are here too. If you're scared of it, stay home and leave us ppl that want normal lives again alone pls
Tina ******
@Joseph *****
I agree that we must move on with our lives but it’s certainly not a mild infection, must take every precautions and be responsible
Joseph ******
@Tina *****
if you or others wanna take precautions that's fine, but restrictions and lockdowns just can't happen anymore. This thing will be with us forever or at least a very long time. Living like this for another 10+ years is not a way to live
Ruth *******
@Joseph *****
as long as there are people unwilling to take simple precautions, lockdowns will continue to be necessary. Sadly, the people complaining the most are the ones causing us to be in this situation
Joseph ******
@Ruth ******
that's a completely stupid take. You do realize the people living on this earth are humans right ? Not robots. Not everyone will comply with covid rules. That's a fact of life, this shit will continue to spread like it or not and lockdown or not it will return , you ppl who think that ppl can just all of a sudden stop what they are doing and lock themselves up are brain dead and you need a reality check of what life is actually like. Ppl need to go outside and work, see friends family etc. This restriction stuff is just doing more harm than good and it's time to move on and just live with the fact it's gonna be here for a while

couldnt agree more

Yes it was just a matter of time.

Exactly, how now will the government react, that is the million dollar question......as there will be many more cases arriveing via tourism and will only take one to escape testing before it quickly spreads if indeed this is not already happening as with other countries 🤔
Ruan *****************
@Stuart *******
it will come over the border from Myanmar. And spread in the community that way. Not via tourists

only temporarily. They are already believing this variant may be much more mild, although more contagious. This may affect decisions.

more mild yet more contagious…sounds like a recipe for bad decision making
