TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses increased scrutiny of expats in Thailand, particularly regarding overstaying visas, with references to reports in local news about monitoring. Commenters share personal experiences related to the issue, including a joke about hotel managers potentially acting against overstayers and another comment highlighting concerns about personal data privacy, specifically how an insurance salesperson had access to private contact information.

I thought about posting something similar here a few months ago. I received a phone call from a salesperson with a really thick British accent. He explained he was selling insurance to expats in Thailand. I asked him how he got my number and he said he actually didn't know and they are just handed a list of people to call. The only problem with that is... My number is registered in my wife's name as she bought it a few years ago while I was on route to Thailand so it would be ready for me at the airport. This guy called me by name and the only 2 places that have my name with this number are immigration and my bank so obviously someone is sharing data.
