NON IMMI OA and health insurance

i hold a non immi oa (ret visa)

2 months ago i went abroad and soon i am reentering thailand using the reentry permit which was stamped on my passport before i exited thailand.

I have to buy the "complementing" medical insurance.

Has the insurance got to abide to some criteria (like during the covid pandemic, maximals, deductions, etc)?

Thank you

TLDR : Answer Summary
For holders of a NON IMMI OA (retirement visa) in Thailand, health insurance must meet specific requirements set by the Thai government. It is necessary to purchase insurance from an approved company that offers policies covering the minimum mandatory requirements, which may include maximum coverage limits and deductibles, similar to the criteria established during the COVID-19 pandemic. It's important to have a certificate of this insurance ready for presentation upon re-entering Thailand.

Must be from a company that is on the Thai governments approved list. They all issue policies that specifically cover the minimum requirement and will issue a certificate to the effect.

Store a copy on your phone AND carry the original any time you return to Thailand

your local Thai embassy will have it.

Here’s a link but as with all things Thai check with the embassy you will be filing with or the Thai immigration office you use because things can change on a dime

Ok this one is confusing. You say that you are on a Non OA visa but you have a re-entry permit stamped in your passport.

The only way that could work is if you are on the “second” year of that visa and you have a stamp that allows you to stay until xxx date. If that’s the case then there is no associated “complementing” medical insurance needed. You already have the stamp until xxx.

hi stuart. I will try to provide as many details as possible. I entered during covid, I m on my 4th year through extensions, my current extension expires next february 2025. Before exiting 2 months ago i checked many times with pattaya immigration and visa agencies, according to them (meaning the stamp in thai on my passport, the one that you mention) this stamp has at the bottom a sentence in thai which says i need to have health insurance.

exactly, you need to have health insurance, but there is a detail you are missing. The validity of being in Thailand is only stamped for how long your insurance is valid for. When you got your stamp until Feb. 2025 your insurance had to be good until then, or they never would have stamped that expiry date in your passport. You extended the visa inside Thailand, and why you need the re-entry permit, but, you should already have your health insurance, or they wouldn't have stamped you in until February.

thank you both you and stuart. Because i did not know how many months i would have stayed abroad, i chose to cancel the health insurance i used to get extension. That s why i am posting asking what are the criteria to buy a new health insurance

theoretically your extension is forfeit as you have not abided by the terms you agreed to. I'd keep quiet about insurance and just come in using the re-entry permit. You may have problems the next time you interact with immigration though

hi john and thank you. Next february 2025 i leave thailand and OA visa and go to europe. Would you suggest me to get a health insurance to reenter? What If the immigration officer asked me for a proof?p

@Gianni *****
if you get a non-o visa after your OA expires you don't need insurance

get the same insurance you had before. There is a very limited list of approved insurance companies, and your old one was accepted so just use it again.

Ah ok. You are not on a visa at all. You initially entered using a Non OA visa and have since got yearly extensions. To acquire those extensions you do indeed need “complementing” insurance because your entry initially was a Non OA.

However the re-entry permit that you have has no requirement for insurance. You have got a stamp that says you are allowed to stay until xxx date. When you leave and return with a valid re-entry permit you will be stamped in until xxx date, you do not need to show insurance for that. It’s only at the time of your next extension that you need to show insurance.

To get off the “gravy train” of needing insurance you’d need to exit without a re-entry permit thus nullifying your current extension status and re-enter on a Non O visa or a tourist visa or exempt entry and apply for the Non O in country.

few months ago i cancel the health insurance i used for the extensions because i was not sure how long i would have stayed abroad. Soon i will reenter and i posted asking what are the criteria to buy a health policy
Stuart *********
@Gianni *****
There is no criteria for you to have insurance. You have a stamp that says you are allowed to stay until xxx date. When you re enter with a valid permit you will be stamped in until that date regardless that you have valid insurance or not.

i totally understood your point. I have the extension until february, and the reentry which i could use until february Having said that, what if the immigration officer at don mueang asked me proof of health insurance?
Stuart *********
@Gianni *****
In theory you could possibly be asked, but you have already proof that you had valid insurance (a certificate) from the time you got that extension. Show that if asked. There is no way they could know that you have subsequently cancelled it. The chances of being asked are extremely slim.

You don’t need it. You have a perfectly valid re-entry permit that would afford you a stamp until February. You needed the insurance to get that “allowed to stay until” date. Now you can stay until that date on re-entry.
