Is health insurance required when renewing a Non-O retirement visa in Thailand?

So I’m on an O visa here and do all the paperwork myself and have renewed this twice. There are many thoughts on if we need Insurance to cover us while in Thailand. I came from England in November and my Emirates covers me until I go home in November. However I’m told Emirates new policy only covers you now for 1 month now.

Is it a requirement now to have insurance when you renew your retirement visa.

Thanks in advance

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion clarifies that there is no insurance requirement for extending a Non-O visa in Thailand. However, if the individual initially entered on a Non-OA visa, insurance is required for extension. A point of concern is temporary travel, where Covid insurance could be needed depending on the duration of absence and plans to return.

There are two types of health insurance needed for Thailand: for entry and for extension of stay (only a Non-OA for the latter). All non-Thais must have $50k USD coverage for the period of time they get for their initial permission of stay. So enter on a visa-exempt entry get 30 day permission to stay, need 30 day insurance coverage. Enter on tourist visa get 60 day permission to stay need 60 day insurance. Enter on 90 day Non-O, need 90 day insurance coverage. Enter on Non-OA get 1 year need 1 year insurance. Enter on re-entry permit of Non-O visa get stamped in for time until extension expires. Despite this rule there have been some reports that only 30 days insurance is needed for entry or to get a Thailand Pass.

Then when you extend a Non-O you don't need insurance, when you extend a Non-OA you do. The coverage is for 400k baht inpatient and 40k outpatient. This is scheduled to increase to 3 million baht coverage by October 2022.

Thanks! I am due to extend mine in June and have been trying to work out if I need insurance to do this

I am going to uk for a month before then, so I would need covid insurance up to the renewal date?

Only issue is temporarily leaving and returning where you’d presently need covid insurance for the remaining length of your O visa!

There is no insurance requirement for an extension of a Non O. If you entered with a Non OA then there is.

sorry to join in here but seems you perhaps know the answer to my question which is this- i got an O-A in Canada but only paid for 9 months as was told by Thai Consulate it was easy to get the other 3 months here, the only reason i did this was because i was already spending lots of money on 15 day Q in Bangkok, air fare, which was great price, etc, some people say i may have to leave the country to get it as at airport when i arrived they wrote down 9 months in my passport, thanks in advance
