Hello expats. I'm considering taking out AXA smart care health insurance. 50 years of age no pre existing conditions. Any negative experiences with the company. Thankyou.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion reveals mixed experiences with AXA Smart Care health insurance among expats in Thailand. Some users praise its affordability and comprehensive coverage, particularly for those without pre-existing conditions. However, negative feedback highlights delays in claims processing, restrictive policies such as coverage limits on doctor visits, and issues with payment for specific medical needs. Many recommend purchasing through brokers for better handling of claims and hospital interactions, while others suggest exploring alternative insurance options. Overall, while AXA has a reputation among hospitals, users advise thorough understanding of the policy details before committing.

I have axa, and I consider them good but I highly recommend going through an agent, they will deal with all the crap hospitals throw at

You.

My suggestion with OA compliant insurance designed for long stays. For 50 the premium sound very high. Should be about USD 220 a year for THB 4M coverage. This will help you obtaining OA visa online full year without depositing THB 800K inside Thai bank. I can share the link

James Adams my mother is 75+ bought the same AXA EasyCare OA insurance . Her premium is THB 35K per year (with THB 300K deductible), it is very good for her age with THB 4M cover. OA visa is the best way to enter Thailand with 1-year multiple entry without the need to block THB 800K with a local bank. We all travel once a year, and this is usually applied online. If extend this inside Thailand then need to block 800K THB in a bank.

chose OA if you want to eventually avoid blocking 800K THB. Also I selected 300K THB deductible to save premium.

Mona Sultan insurance for OA has nothing to do with 800k in the bank and $200 a year hardly covers third party car liability insurance let alone health insurance for 4 million baht

Subscribed it since 3 years and happy. Several times at Bangkok Hospital and they take care of it without advancing money from my pocket.

You are in luck , I am best person to give you best advice as I just came out of hospital and had a claim

Firstly the positive , it’s well priced with most things covered as it appears , here is the reality ( sorry in advance for being messy)

I was in hospital for 2 weeks , including ICU.

On discharge I wanted insurance to pay instead of me paying and then waiting .

9 am doctors issued discharge and total billing .

I was only let out at 19:30 pm.

It took them all day to

Issue a guarantee.

I was asked to sign disclosure forms , which I did, appearantly did it wrong . Instead if pointing out what was wrong they kept asking to me sign

Now on to claim , they decided NOT to cover about 20% of it

Why ? I had 4 different doctors looking after me , so 4 different specialities would visit me daily . AXA pays for only 1 doctor visit per day , does not matter the speciality.

In ICU I needed oxygen , they refused to pay that

At night I wanted sleeping pill to be able to sleep ( while in the hospital ) they refused to cover that

Dr wanted to run some tests because could not determine the reason for my illness , AXA refused to pay saying this test is not necessary .

So to summarise, while well priced , it is not as pleasant and easy as international policies but then it also cost much less.

Hospital doctors said they hate dealing with Thai insurance companies

Hope it helps

Duncan McRae Scott I have mixed feelings. In terms of cost of premiums I think AXA is of the best, but the downside is how slow and picky they can be. Perfect example is paying for only 1 doctor visit. This is not something in patients control and even less so when have different doctors. “Better” policies have max total they would pay for doctor visit , or no limit , but those policies come at a much higher premium. International policies normally more lenient, but premiums are double if not higher . Despite popular myth that Thai insurances are not regulated , it’s actually totally opposite. Also another “positive “ that I will try to explain as short as possible . Normally private hospital likr Bangkok hospital , would require either a deposit or letter of guarantee from the insurance. In case of emergency like mine, there was no time to apply for pre approval or a guarantee but yet when hospital saw it was AXA, I got admitted on the spot, no deposit was asked. Within about 2 hours from arriving in ER I was already in ICU. Not once hospital asked for any money during treatment.

I know quite a few people who have international policies or with other companies and almost all were asked for a deposit.

So I think AXA has a good reputation with hospitals, my only complaints is the waiting time to process and things they did not cover. BUT to put it in perspective , amount they did not cover is about the same as premium price difference between say AXA and April.

This was my first claim in 3 years , even with what was not covered I have still saved money on premiums if I was with another company

Hope it makes sense

Andy Magann Be aware travel insurance primary objective is to have you returned home for treatment at which point moment you step foot in Australia , insurance stops to pay.if they decide to bring you home instead of local treatment , also do not expect biz class flight but would be economy. On the other hand , health insurance is normally a 6 month waiting period before you can make a claim , though accidents covered immediately

Andy Magann does cover more offer health insurance or only travel insurance? If only travel there will be a limit of days you get covered while away. Some only 45 days some 60 days

Andy Magann ps. As others mentioned go through a broker , they have internal contact to speed and clear things up . If you go direct , you will hang yourself while waiting 😁

Andy Magann international policy easier to pay but premium be double , in my case , at the end of the day , even with what they did not cover , still cheaper than full international policy and now that I know the “stupid” rules can navigate it better next time .

No it’s an excellent, reputable company but far to expensive especially at higher ages not making if affordable for most people. At 75 you will feel to pain of expensive premiums and have not any possibility to choose an other option

Nothing bad about the company and not sure your exact situation ….one thing I found out , is if you buy direct from from their website , and you have to make any claims you are on your own…. Definitely go through an agent or broker they know the system and how to work it a little more then I did ……. The service is better I found and sometimes they have extra private deals with the hospitals for other small free things ….I ended up with AXA through

….. very good service and happy to recommend
