For those living abroad or planning to move—what international health insurance do you use and would you recommend it? I’m starting to explore options and would love your input on what’s worked well (or not) for you. Thanks in advance!

TLDR : Answer Summary
Expats living in Thailand are seeking recommendations for international health insurance. Options mentioned include several providers such as Pacific Cross, AIA, Cigna, and Allianz. Discussions highlight factors to consider such as comprehensive coverage for long-term stays, acceptance of preexisting conditions, and the importance of policy terms that don't lead to sudden premium hikes. Experiences shared by users range from positive claims experiences with Pacific Cross to negative encounters with AIA. Recommendations also suggest consulting with insurance brokers like Tenzing Pacific Services for tailored advice.

I use Allianz since they seem reputable related to large claims but even with no claims, my rate increased 11% in year 2 and another 5% in year 3 and year 3 was going to be a bigger increase but I was only able to get them to reduce the increase to 5%. At some point, they will likely be too expensive for me. Uggg.

I use a Medicare advantage plan. I pay the hospital bill for the Thai hospital that provided the care and then submit to Medicare for reimbursement. Every submitted claim has been paid to me. This only works if you live outside the US for less than 6 months a year.

Insurance prices are crazy over here , but you can see why when you live here, My Thai friends are never out of the hospital!! Cough ...sore throat... Fever ... Sore toe.. they are in !

This is then a blank cheque for all the hospitals and claims left , right and centre!! So any decent policies now are going to cost a lot, and it's a bit of a minefield...and as with everything else in Thailand there will be agents galore all wanting to sell you a policy..

I ended up going with Cigna .. let's hope they're decent if I ever end up needing to claim.

I looked at medical insurance for an OA visa. The price was more expensive than my health insurance policy in the US and that takes some doing.

Be very careful. I was with Cigna. Never claimed but after a birthday they tripled the premium. Said I reached a higher risk pool. Yeah I got a year older! So whatever they quote initially they never guarantee to only increase relative to Inflation. I cancelled and use saved premiums to pay as I go. But bills for surgery etc are not cheap

insurance is priced by tiers. You may only have aged a year but you could have passed into the next age tier.

I used AIA. Be aware.

I paid $2700AUD for 12 months. I have zero existing health issues. I made a claim for a small amount for a skin issue and they never paid out. All their correspondence is in Thai, although they're set up as an expat provider.

My agent who is well known on forums touting for business just stopped communicating with me after I decided not to renew my policy.

I post my experiences up so others don't get scammed.

I use Pacific Cross but I haven’t had to file a claim yet with them as I’m healthy at the moment, so I can’t totally vouch for them.

had a serious motorcycle accident 3 months after moving here. 2 weeks in hospital-2 orthopedic surgeries-Pacific Cross paid out wonderfully! 👌🏼

I had two claims (3 weeks in a 1st class single room, surgery, wound dressing.....) and they paid without any questions. I commend them.

Depends on how long you plan to stay out of your home country. If you're moving abroad semi-permanently/permanently, you'll want comprehensive international health insurance. You'll need the better benefits like cancer treatment and coverage for preexisting conditions as you get older.

You'll need to get on a plan before you get too old. Once you are insured, you can stay insured for life. But if you wait until you're older then you may not get accepted.

I use this company for my comprehensive international health insurance. They are founded by expats and focus on expats. They work with something like 50+ different insurers, so they'll always find you the best value policy with a reputable insurer that fits your budget. I found a UK plan from HCI the best value.

Hi yvette firstly international health insurance is definitely the best option. It is more expensive thats for sure but there are a few major differences etc.

Happy to chat with you if you want to dm me as it does depend on the clients also. But dont fall for the ones on here who are only ties to thai insurers .

clearly depends on your circumstances - you cannot say it is better for everyone
