[750 baht a month health insurance]

Good morning. My post is loosely visa/work permit related so I hope someone will be able to offer some advice. I have a Non B visa in my passport and have just recently been issued a work permit.

Someone has told me that my school or I can apply for health insurance which is 750 baht a month and 'covers everything'. Can anyone shed any light on whether I would qualify, extent of coverage (for example will it cover riding a motorbike with a Thai driving licence), where it can be used and any other relevant info.

If possible I want to be absolutely clear about this and therefore covered, last year I was quoted 215k Thai baht for a back operation and had to go home for 3 months - so this is important to me. Any questions or anything I have not made clear - please ask.

Many thanks in advance.....

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the health insurance costing 750 baht a month linked to the user's Non-B visa and newly acquired work permit in Thailand. Users provide insights regarding the policy's limitations, including its basic coverage and suggested accident insurance. There's a discussion around the scope of coverage, particularly concerning motorbike accidents, and the importance of understanding Social Security contributions. Some comments mention that while the 750 baht may provide basic emergency care, comprehensive plans can be significantly more expensive, highlighting a need for greater clarity and possibly better options.

I am turning off commenting - the SSO is not insurance, and this thread has devolved into comparing it with insurance !

just a note ... if you are over 60 your Thai employer cannot get you coverage, you will have to find insurance on your and that is quite costly
Troy *********
750 a month will just be VERY basic emergency care in case of an accident and you only needing outpatient treatment. there will be a max payout for each month/quarter/year so check the policy or check with your employer as they gave it to you right?
David ****************
@Fr***
. It was paid by insurance?
Troy *********
So my point is, not all government issued insurance is the same

@Frank *************
mine only entitles me to 10,000 baht outpatient care and that's from a Government school.
Troy *********
@Gordon ****
it is in that price range. Try Bupa insurance which is very popular with expats.

@Frank *************
how do you even know what insurance company he has got lol

20+k a year? That must be for a young man surely? I can't believe fully comprehensive insurance would be in that sort of price range?
Troy *********
average full comprehensive expat insurance is around 20+K per year.

It's something that needs careful thought and something that needs addressing as I found out last year.
Gord *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
Yes I would imagine that's pretty standard with most companies worldwide
Bruce *****************
Pre existing conditions are not covered
Gord *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
Yes, that certainly has to be a consideration.....
Lloyd ********
Remember that you will have no cover until you have made 3 monthly payments
Daniel ************
isnt it that you receive your card after 3 months, but get reimbursed in emergency cases in the 3 months ?

Thanks for all the comments

I understand that so from what I read I think you may well be covered in the event of an accident but as
@Andre *********************
mentions there may be better options
Lloyd ********
It is not insurance, essentially, it is the same as NI contributions back home. Ergo, it covers all the same stuff as would be at home.

Thanks Lloyd. Had a read of that and couldn't find any info related to exceptions - eg motorbike accident even if you are legal, but will explore other options further....
Andre **********************
Been with them for 4 years and used it once without hassle at Vejthani paid nothing. Renew them yearly when they send the invoice.
Andre **********************
This is how the card looks like with the coverage stated.

No problem with motorcycle accidents.. got treated for free at the Kluaynamthai hospital as usual after crashing at a race track.

A year mate. ✌️

3k a year or a month ?
Andre **********************
Walk into any K BANK or Muang Thai Insurance anywhere and talk to their officers there. Ask them for the foreigners accident plan under Muang Thai Insurance.
John ******
There is a white card with green writing ie the name of the hospital and if one was a teacher and have relatives working at the hospital also

@Andre *********************
I'm actually 52 next month. Who with?
Andre **********************
I paid mine for about THB 3k a year covered for THB 1mill for any kind of accidents etc. But depends on your age. I'm below 50.

@Andre *********************
Yes and it was a part of the original question/post
Andre **********************
OPD / IPD is healthcare. What you're concerned about now is accident coverage.
Andre **********************
Try others mate. There's cheaper options.

The 4k a month was for a 51 year old man with Bupa Thailand
Andre **********************
It's best to get separate accident coverage for yourself for like less than 4 k a year based on your age.
Andre **********************
@Gordon ****
@Lloyd *******
is right as per below comment.
Lloyd ********
I have posted in the file section, the government issued, (in English) guide to the SSO

So 2 million Thai baht a year would have covered my back operation last year. I did mention riding a motorbike also. If you are driving legally here would that be covered or not? Thanks
Daniel ************
its 5% of your salary, ax 750 THB which is SSO - Social Security ... you can choose a hospital near u from the SSO list (if they have plave available , otherwise need to choose one more far away). Its covering 2 Mio THB per year.
Andre **********************
Isn't that THB 750 comes from your monthly SSO contribution to the funds? Another THB 750 comes from your school with a total of THB 1,500 monthly. Just to be clear.
Andre **********************
@Gordon ****
afaik, no. It's better for you to get a separate one. My reason is simple, if anything happens to you (touch wood), it will be easier for you to go to any hospitals and seek treatment etc. I mean if you can afford it, medical is expensive everywhere so having an extra one doesn't harm us.

Thanks. So is there a definitive answer anywhere as to extent of coverage? I assume from what I've read that the coverage is not 'extensive' and can only probably be used in a Govt hospital. For someone of my age then it's looking like the 4k baht a month with Bupa Thailand....
Andre **********************
Now if you're looking for an additional coverage for yourself, I suggest you to get a separate one for foreigners and pay yearly. This will come with English terms and conditions and you will understand better for what you're covered for.
Andre **********************
@Gordon ****
the thing is about this "health insurance" they are compulsory for anyone who's employed in any Thai companies here. The coverage is not extensive as you may have hope for as you got to choose your main hospital which you opted for and not all major hospital qualify. Mostly governmental hospitals etc.

Yes, there are so many companies and each one is different. I have been on a basic Thai Bupa insurance. One of the only ones that covers bikes but at a premium. Going to upgrade to a more expensive one. It is a lot more than you are paying though. Can't imagine it covers a lot. Ask the company and ask your local hospital the cost of a night. That is how I chose. Good luck.
David ************
Ask the insurance company in question. All carriers will be different
Kari ********
I see. I'd shop around for ins then. There have been a few posts about different companies and what they offer. Btw, most companies don't cover motorbike accidents unless you pay a really high premium.
