I plan to travel to Thailand from USA in January and stay for three months. In the past I have applied for a 60 day visa, then gotten a 30 day extension after 60 days. Is that still the procedure I must follow? It included sending an application to the office in Los Angles with my passport, my financials, pictures, passport and flight and hotel reservations. I’m hoping all that has been streamlined. Please tell me what the requirements are now. I have visited Thailand for each of the past 25 years.

TLDR : Answer Summary
For your trip to Thailand in January, you have options regarding your visa application. You can apply online for a single-entry tourist visa instead of sending your passport to the consulate. The online process provides you with an e-visa document to print. Moreover, Thailand's current regulations include a visa exemption for 60 days for American passport holders, which can be followed by a possible 30-day extension. Therefore, you may opt to enter visa-exempt for a total of up to 90 days (60 days plus a 30-day extension), simplifying your travel preparations.

You are right. For Thai we just called it Free visa. In the past, Sometimes I entered the country with my American passport and there was only 30 days FREE visa. Thanks
it's not a free visa. It's not any visa. A visa is something you apply for any pay for. It's called visa EXEMPT meaning you are exempt from needing a visa. It's not a visa.
You can still apply for a single entry tourist visa, but you no longer send in your passport. It's all done online, and your visa is an e-mail that you receive with a document you print off.
But currently visa exempt has been increased to 60 days and you can apply one time for a 30 day extension. So not applying for a visa will give you the same amount of days as if you do apply for a visa at the moment.
. Thanks. So now I just land in Bangkok with just my return flight ticket dated 90 days later. But I apply for an additional 30 days just before the 60 days are up. Seems too easy compared to what I l have done in the past.
