Heading out of Thailand for a week. I have just read that there is a slight change in the process at the airport. Previously, went through immigration, then was directed to the re-entry desk. The information I just read was that you need to do the re-entry before going through immigration. Apparently, they have tightened up on this in the last couple of months. It was suggested that if you do immigration first, it is too late ( officially, you have already left Thailand, according to the argument). Interested in anyone's experience of late.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Recent discussions among expats indicate some confusion regarding the process to obtain a re-entry permit when leaving Thailand. Historically, the process involves visiting a re-entry permit desk before or after immigration depending on the airport. Most comments suggest that despite rumors of tightened rules, the procedure remains largely unchanged, with variations between airports. Travelers should approach immigration and specifically request a re-entry permit; procedures at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports differ slightly. Additionally, fees for single and multiple re-entries through informal sources were confirmed to be 1200 THB and 4000 THB, respectively, while it's noted that there is a service fee at both airports.
It's still the same rule, I just did it yesterday at don muang airport. At the immigration just tell them you want a re entry permit and after they stamp the re entry office is just behind it. Pay 1200 and they will stop the single reentry permit
As Tod says, which of passport control and re-entry permit application comes first depends on the airport you departure. Even in Bangkok, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang have opposite procedures. If you clear immigration first, tell the officer that you need a re-entry permit.
I don't believe they've 'tightened up' anything or changed the procedure.
You've always stamped out at DMK before you bought the re-entry permit, and last I remember the re-entry permit counter is still in International Departure 2 in Suvarnabhumi.
You tell the officer when you stamp out you need a re-entry permit they'll send you to the re-entry counter.
I did hear you should not use the auto out electronic departure gates and instead go to an officer to hard stamp out and tell them you need a re-entry permit.
Also as far as I know BOTH airports have that "pay 200baht extra service fee" and don't need copies, forms or photo to get re-entry permits. (making single re-entry permits 1200 and multiple 4000)
You wanna pay face value (single 1000, mulitple 3800) you need TM8, copies of your visa/entry/data page, and a passport sized photo.
