What is the current process for obtaining a re-entry permit at Suvarnabhumi Airport?

I’ve seen mixed reports on Survanbhumi Airport re-entry permit process. Today I can confirm that it’s exactly like it was before. You need to enter through gate / zone 2, where you can see a sign saying re-entry permit counter.

Then go through security like normal, and proceed to the re-entry permit desk before going through passport control.

I think this will save stress so you don’t accidentally go through a different zone where there’s no re-entry counter. Meaning you would have to go through passport control first.

The process was smooth and simple for me today, with absolutely no people in the cue. The airport was fairly busy though despite it being low season.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The re-entry permit process at Suvarnabhumi Airport remains unchanged. Travelers need to enter through Zone 2, where the re-entry permit counter is located, before going through security and passport control. It is crucial to avoid other zones to prevent confusion and potential delays. Comments from users suggest variations in experiences, with most agreeing that entering through Zone 2 is the easiest route. A re-entry permit is necessary for long-term visa holders to maintain their visa status when exiting the country.

It's best to obtain a re-entry permit whenever you go for your extension of stay to avoid stress and uncertainty. The only time getting a re-entry permit wasn't necessary was during Covid as you couldn't travel back then anyway.

The airport re entry permit procedure is simple enough but I'd consider it to be there for emergencies only. If you're a frequent traveler and not one of these expats who never leaves Thailand you get it done at the same time as your extension.

I assume this is to obtain a re-entry permit. I already have a re-entry permit, do I need to use gate 2?

@Ton ******
, you can go whatever gate you want. As you already have a valid re-entry permit, you cannot get another anyway.

I’m confused! What’s reentry for? Passengers in transit?

If you have a long term visa eg retirement/marriage and you don’t want your visa to be cancelled when you stamp out you need to purchase a re-entry permit this allows you to come back and your visa is still valid note this will not extend your visa you must return before your visa/extension ends and in time to renew it.

been here for years and I didn’t know that 😂

I've seen gate 2 closed and you have to go thru gate 1 ...walk airside, then re-enter gate 2 to get to the small cupboard the 2 reentry officers sit

There is only ONE re-entry counter, and it is located on the passport control floor at International Departure Gate 2, before you go through the passport control/immigration officers. (hasn't changed for years)

IF you go through other international departure gates, you get through passport control, tell officer that you need a re-entry permit, then you will be directed to go to the re-entry counter at Gate 2 from the airside.

So as we always advise, go to Gate 2 is the easiest to get to the re-entry counter.

This is where the re-entry counter is located.

I saw your comment previously and it was super helpful, thank you

For example, this is the notice when you get through passport control at Gate 3.

(I asked an officer to permission to take this photo)

You can do both

That contradicts previous (recent) reports stating that you have to go through passport control first (at zone 2 preferably) and then head to the re-entry office in the corner on your left. Anyway, I'll see it tomorrow 😁

there are two sides you can go through immigration. Each side has a boot where you can ask for re entry permit BUT sometimes there are still two sides where are the immigration boots but just on one side the re entry boot. If you enter on the side without s re entry boot you go through immigration and via the shoppingcorridor you enter the other immigration from the backside and join the re entry boot. So yes in general first re entry and then immigration but sometimes first immigration walk 200 meters to the other immigration and enter the rentry boot! That is the reason why you get two conflicting answers!

I was talking about zone 2 only, maybe that wasn't clear.
