What are the current challenges with obtaining COVID-19 visa extensions at Samut Prakan Immigration office?

Samut Prakan office 9 am this morning. Not very busy in part because they were turning away quite a few (for covid extensions). Before some negotiating with my wife they were also denying mine. At first, an officer told me because I had 3 extensions already, then he went on to tell my wife that my (U.S.) embassy says it's ok to travel home, therefore no extension. (personally saw them deny 2 from the Philippines and 1 Canadian with the same story)

TLDR : Answer Summary
Recent experiences at the Samut Prakan Immigration office reveal a toughened stance on COVID-19 extensions. Several expats were denied extensions, even those with previous applications. Officers cited guidance from U.S. embassies encouraging travel as a reason for denial. There is speculation that the office may prioritize individuals with alternative visa options, urging those eligible to switch to appropriate visa types. The overall trend seems to indicate that the COVID-19 extension allowances may be coming to an end, with many suggesting that applicants consider applying at other offices, such as in Bangkok.

It looks like the 60 day extension of stays are quickly coming to an end. Remember, these are OPTIONAL stays, and the immigration officer has no right to give them out

same here. The officer told me that they only give covid visa to whom don't have airplane back home. Meanwhile people i konw got covid extend at bkk.

I went to Samut Prakan on Wednesday to see about my β€œmistake” in seasoning my cash. Saw something similar with a guy get refused an extension and told to get out.

What it seems to be IS if a person has another way to get a visa/extension (marriage, retirement, raising children etc) they are looking at people milking covid extensions with a critical eye, denying them a covid extension and telling them to get their shit sorted on the correct visa type they can qualify for.

Now is this a sign of things to come OR just an isolated office that is tired of handing out endless 60 day extensions? Who can tell.

I would say perhaps check into a bangkok hotel for a day and then go apply for a 60 day covid extension at the Bangkok immigration office (either Chaengwattana or Muang Thong Thani, depending on the entry stamp you came in on)

If you go that route, get a TM30 from the Bangkok hotel. I have a friend who had a similar issue, and was required to come back with a TM30.

Excellent point
@J**
(y) make sure if you check into a hotel they do file a TM30 on you to show you are registered IN bangkok :)

I have heard from friends too that Samut Prakan has practically stopped giving them out now.

Thank you for the update. People keep in mind this is at the Samut Prakan Immigration office (an office known to give people a hard time already)

100% understandable & i was definitely lacking in the preparation department (again). Extension's end was never in question but today would/could've been a real stunner!

I think it's just that office going "rogue" on people because no one at any of the other 70+ offices is reporting they're getting ANY grief when applying for a new covid extension.

Wasn't too aware of the reputation as 7 yrs of positive experiences there. I guess every office/r is unique. The situation caught me a little off-guard, thought I was cool til late Nov. If not for my wife and an understanding officer, I'd be headed back to the States in shock. πŸ˜„

the thing is
@Ja***
you haven't been on covid extension for the previous 7 years when dealing with Samut Prakan.

I totally understand their view of the covid extension as a means to buy time to leave, NOT as a means to stay here ;)

Back to back Covid extensions are the new back to back visa exemptions πŸ˜‰
