Not necessarily visa related but would like some info if possible . I have a friend in bkk who is now on overstay day 3. He has already extended by 30 days so obviously his next step is pay his fine and leave the country . Right here’s where I need some info . He doesn’t have a return ticket out of the country at this moment in time . If he gets stopped and passport checked, will they a, immediately deport him back to UK or b, keep him in a detention cell until the funds for a flight to Uk become available . TIA and feel free to remove if not appropriate

TLDR : Answer Summary
A person in Thailand on an overstay may face fines and potential deportation if caught without a return ticket. They might be detained until they can afford a flight home. The best course of action is to pay the overstay fine and exit the country, ideally before being stopped. Options for exiting include border bouncing or immediate flight, with risks involved in each.
IF he hasn't gotten TWO 30 day visa exempt entries this year by a land crossing he could border bounce, pay the overstay fine, stamp out, stamp in&out of another country and then stamp back into thailand for a new 30 day visa exempt entry.
OR
He could fly out and back (which carries a much higher risk that he might not get let back in)..
As I have said over and over, it is NOT the fact that someone overstays that is the problem IF they can get to a border or to the airport to fly out
It's getting caught out on something else while ON overstay that runs you off the rails
if he gets stopped and they want to, they'll take him to IDC, immigration lock up, he'll see a judge, get fined, get banned for 5 years and then be deported (at his expense) back to the country his passport is from.
if he's caught he's blacklisted for 5 years when he's deported. ANY overstay (even one single day) results in a 5 year ban if you're caught out on it and deported.
