The Tourist Police makes it sound like a competition. The winner this week is the 70 year old Englishman with 187 days overstay.

Don't join this competition, in either way you lose.

TLDR : Answer Summary
In a recent discussion, a case was highlighted where a 70-year-old Englishman overstayed his visa by 187 days, generating reactions from the community about the implications of such an overstay. Observations noted that the maximum fine for overstaying is set at 20,000 baht, yet there are anecdotal accounts suggesting that fines may be reduced to between 3,000 and 5,000 baht if the individual is caught by authorities. The community expressed concern regarding factors like the elderly gentleman's understanding of immigration rules and the treatment of foreigners in Thailand, while also sparking debates on age-related forgetfulness.

I know a man that was five years overstayed. At the end, and following the advices of many friends, he went by himself to Inmigration office to explain his case. After a lot of pics with astonished officials and 20.000 baht fine he came back to his home country.

If anybody has any experience / knows the procedure for making donations and visits to IDC Suan Phlu, would you please PM me the details. I'm interested and tried following the "links" but my emails keep bouncing back. Thanks!

Philip Perry & Russell Bowren, nope, the maximum overstay fine is 20K baht, period end of story.

And truth be told, IF you're caught while on an overstay like that you see a judge who sets aside the entire 20K baht overstay fine and assesses you a fine of between 3K and 5K baht usually. Then you're held in IDC until you can get your own way out on a flag carrier back to the country your passport comes from.
