Just read this sometimes I wonder if it’s worth it.
Really public forum and a question like that. Wow. But obviously not asked by a criminal mind.

This isn't a third world country like America, of course you get deported for being in Thailand ILLEGALLY.
, Graham Seal is correct , what you say applies only if you are
actually at a border leaving the country but should you be stopped at any point within the country the penalties are as Graham states , very serious.

in 2003 i went to thailand from Hawaii on a 3 month ticket and thought i was allowed to stay all 3 months with no border runs. thankfully i decided to go to Laos near the end of the second month. i hit the laos border but Thai guards informed me i was overstay almost a month. told me all the money i had was barely enough to pay my fines. i said well, ok, i won’t go through into Laos for a few more days until my next check is deposited into my account. the guards said fine, i would be staying there in immigration hold. i quickly decided that better to pay up than stay in the hole they reserve for overstay. no jail time and lesson learned. i had less than $10 a day left for a week but still better than the alternative.

All you need to know is, basically, don't do it.
Just get the extension. Which you can do weeks and weeks before your expiry date; the extension is added to your *existing* due date, so you don't lose any time. In other words, if your due date is April 1st, then your new due date will be 31st, whether you go in on March 10th or March 31st.
Extension costs 1,900 Baht, one days overstay costs 500 Baht *if you surrender at immigration/the airport and do not have an interaction with police which requires them to look at your passport* (if you get unlucky and/or irresponsible and have such an encounter with police, you get a 5 year blacklisting for even just one days overstay).
So by opting for overstaying instead of getting the extension, you save 400-1,400 Baht *at the most*.
The risks just do not match the saving.

once for possession of weed. saved me from going to Phuket right before the tsunami 2004. thankful. spent a month in3 different jails.

The rule is simple.
If you are caught on the street by Police on overstay even 1 day.
It is detention, deportation and ban.
It happens, in most cases it would be someone having interaction with police that requires your details.
If you surrender (this means show up yourself) at immigration or the airport, you are able to pay required fines and extend or exit whichever is applicable.
Chris doesn't make the laws in Thailand. Why would it be his rule? That's the law

over staying is directly offending the Thai King & Government & can lead to lengthy bans / problems go pay the 20.000THB max fine at immigration leave & come back ... hopefully they let you back in... :(

dont overstay, its the direct ticket to problems. the forms are a bit long but just do them, pay the fee, get a visa. its easier than dealing with troubles.

I did a 6month tourist visa
I failed to realise I must exit the country after 60 days then re enter , I don’t know if this counts as over stayed but I “overstayed” 14 days 🤣🤣
Did a boarder run payed 7000baht at the border then returned into Thailand 🇹🇭
Maybe I guess if you don’t have this 6month visa or a visa to show your intention of staying a long time you’d get slapped abit harder for over staying ?
Some people mistakenly think that the online info from Thai Embassies, where it says visa validated for six months means they can stay for six months one time.
Its not a six months visa. It is valid for six months and is multiple entry. There is definitely a difference. It is basically a 2 month visa which you can extend for 30 days.

No but my friend was deported after being thrown in immigration jail for a few months living in squalid conditions and was also blacklisted for 5 yrs. He was caught on only a couple of days overstay. Overstay is not a joke.
If you turn yourself in you will pay a fine, if you are caught by police it's a different story. Police may stop you at a motorcycle checkpoint for example, check your ID / passport and then detain you if your visa has expired. Next you will get to find out just how many real friends you have in LOS.
Daniel *****
Just know that it can and does happen, the immigration detention centre is full, you can visit the detainees and and bring them food and supplies. Go and check it out for yourself.
Nobody wants to see the cells in the IDC. They are not pretty and you are correct, if you get picked up on overstay by immigration you will be looking at a few months being processed.
the one talking BS is you. It makes a difference if your overstay is detected at the airport immigration whilst you are leaving the country, or if you happen to run into a check somewhere inside Thailand
yes! when in the immigration office you sometimes see people in hand cuffs being led away to a NON public place. its no joke, the forms are a pain, but better to do them, get a nice new visa, and be allowed to have nice holidays in the future, no troubles and bans. I have children here, 5 year ban is a long time! its not worth the trouble over a 1900 baht visa and a trip to the office for 1 day! Even when my visa had issues, the IO told me how to fix them, what to do, where to go and was reasonable and polite.

A number years ago I went to my agent to do a visa run for my edu visa. I had 2 blank pages left so never thought anything of it, however he said I needed a minimum of 3 to do the run. I only had a few days left and my embassy said a new passport would take weeks. Immigration said they would allow me 11 days over and then I would have to turn myself in. I applied for a new passport and contacted every type of officials details I could find to get it sped up and luckily it arrived in time but I was in extreme panic mode.
Taz **********
I know someone who had their passport stolen, they had a police report and had used it to order a new passport, they visited immigration and asked what they should do, immigration response was they couldn’t do anything until the new passport arrived.
When it arrived they went to immigration to see what they needed to do.
They were shown a picture on a screen of them in line at the airport, and asked if that was them.
Then asked to sit and wait, shortly after immigration police came and took them into another area.
They were asked if they had a ticket to leave Thailand or finances to buy one.
Their ticket was 3 months away, so then informed they needed to buy a ticket that day or be detained until their current booking came about.
Then they asked if they could get their Thai girlfriend to come and discuss the situation.
After she discussed the situation with immigration the situation improved and other options were made available.
They purchased tickets to leave Thailand the next day.
There is more to this story but I will not reveal it here 🤔
The overstay fines are just their no bonus money. Just make it to the Airport asap
ฉันเป็นทางของประชาชน *********
I just left 2 months ago 2 year overstay. If you make it to the airport just have 20k baht to pay at the passport checkpoint and you will only have a 3 year ban if less than 3 years overstay.

cuz people like to play stupid games. There are people smuggling sxxt even tho they know that airports are filled up with sniffing dogs but they still take the risk
one locked eyes w me and started rushing at me saying “i’ll go with you “ several times. i quickly said NO forcibly several times and deflected him. i got the feeling he was quite high on meth and maybe even thought i was looking for black man sexual experience. never ever make eye contact.
the same that all nigerians do in europe. They sit around a popular spot (usually a train station) and they spend the whole day selling sxxt and getting drunk

I just want to say to you, what a nice fella you are…Why are people so bad and negative all the time..The bloke was just asking a normal question.?
he’s definitely in a predicament and maybe why his thinking is a bit off, but asking publicly if anyone else is currently breaking the law is pretty hilarious. He could at least frame a “hypothetical” or tell us about his “friend” thats on overstay and ask what his options are.

some of you guys are just brutal. What’s dumb about that question? That’s the thing about this group. There are so many guys that just want to attack every question that is asked, it’s just not a good place for people to get advice. Sad, really.

Ross Thompson you’re wrong. Soo wrong!

And there it is again. You guys are just brutal. People don’t ask questions that are stupid. They ask because they don’t know. It might seem stupid to you, because, of course, you know everything, so sure, just make fun of someone who doesn’t know and comes here to sincerely ask for help.
I’m out of here. But go ahead, post one more comment that makes me the bad guy. 🙄
Frank **********
Ross Thompson let's be serious, you don't have to be a brain surgeon to figure out what will happen depending on how long the overstay is. There have been questions asked in here that defy common sense. I didn't know much about the culture or requirements to stay. I got a lot of information off the Thai Embassy website and just by going to reliable sites on Google. We should expect someone to do a little bit if their own research and then ask questions. When you get stupid post like "is it hot in Thailand" or "how many pair of underwear should I bring", then maybe they should stay home instead.
where in the question does it state that he is asking someone in the present tense of overstay. The question clearly isn’t trying to out someone. It’s asking the World Wide Web if anyone in the past has experienced deportation from an overstay incident. Assuming that the accused is still on the forum in their home country and can share their experience.
oh FFS - he uses the words “ currently overstaying “ is that not present tense enough for you 🙄
I agree that the question is not about trying to actually out somebody -he is looking for others in a similar situation to himself - but the way the actual question is asked is dumb
let me quote you “where in the question does it state that he is asking someone in the present tense of overstay”, his last three words of his post is literally “OR IS CURRENTLY OVERSTAYING”
When you can’t even finish reading a single sentence yikes

Again, brutal. If you think it’s a dumb question, why not ignore it instead of tearing into someone’s soul? And there are so many that do this here.
The question may make him a fool, but your response makes you a tool.
Shaming the OP for a hypothetical ‘someone who might be overstating’ answering the question, is a bit silly when thought of that way isn’t it?
The person who asks the question gets to ask, he’s not forcing anyone to answer. Even if the question isn’t phrased perfectly, that doesn’t negate the inquiry and intention.
hilarious pointing out clear misuse of a word only to have the peanut gallery chime in they also don’t know what the word means, it’s ok friend just make it up as you go 🙃
asking people on facebook, where many are using there real names, if they are currently illegally in thailand on overstay is unquestionably and undeniably an absolutely stupid question. Defending that question being reasonable or “well he’s not forcing anyone to answer” is a stupid take, pure cringe
But hey, if you’re dumb enough to overstay you might be dumb enough to talk about it publicly and more speed to getting arrested, blacklisted, or kicked out
In most cases I'd rather be stupid than a tool. But in your case it seems maybe you enjoy being both? 🤷🏻♂️
What's funny here is you're just throwing shit about something that has nothing to do with you, don't you have better things to do than to shame people who are asking for help?
i mean you apparently don’t even know what a tool is, you apparently care more about rhyming than actually making sense.
I can spare the 10 seconds it took me to initially reply to OP, also a but ironic that you’re trying to call me out for “throwing shit” about something that has nothing to do with me…..while you are doing just that
Let's not get it twisted. My orientation is being helpful in a group that's for people asking for help, so.. I'm here for that, what are you here for? 💩
sorry but no part of my reply was being a troll, from pointing out your clear misuse of what a “tool” is to you being a hypocrite. One of us is a classic troll but it isn’t me, and a sad attempt at gaslighting at that.
I’ve also given my weight in helpful advice and suggestions over the years
if you have to ask that question i’m affraid you won’t understand the answer, as obvious as it is.
I agree this group has quite a few snarky people with a little too much free time, but this is one of the dumbest question’s i’ve seen in the 3+ years i’ve been in this group.
the person had passport stolen but didn't know visa expiry date was wrong. So got new passport went to immigration. Told was on overstay but as he prepared to pay, guards came in and dragged him out. No one knew where he'd vanished to for days.
