I am an American, traveling through southeast Asia since January, and I am looking to stay in Thailand longer and wanting to learn more Thai language. I am currently in Thailand on a 30 day tourist visa on arrival, that ends Oct 26, but not able to get an extension because my current landlord is not able to provide the correct documents immigration is asking for. So I will be leaving the kingdom to renew the visa, and ultimately am aiming for an education visa. I am in Chiangmai now looking at schools to find the one that will work best for me (I am differently-abled and need a slower pace of teaching style).

What I need advice on is the precise procedure needed for me to get a 60 day tourist visa. Where do I need to go, what do I need to do, how do I do it, what can I expect the process to be like and any other useful information or suggestions you might have for me, both regarding the 60 day and the educational visa.

I appreciate any help you can offer, and I apologise if I have neglected any information needed to give me the most accurate advice. Feel free to ask me anything you need to be able to help me better. Thank you!

TLDR : Answer Summary
An American traveler currently in Thailand on a 30-day tourist visa is seeking advice on how to obtain a 60-day tourist visa due to difficulties in extending their current visa. They are planning to leave Thailand to renew their visa and aim to enroll in a Thai language school for an education visa. Community responses highlight that to acquire a single-entry education visa, one must enroll in a school, pay tuition, and obtain necessary documents from the school before applying at a Thai consulate. For the 60-day tourist visa, it is suggested that the traveler visit the Thai consulate in Vientiane, Laos, as it is considered easier. Travelers can enter Laos from Thailand via Nong Khai and then apply for the visa for a fee of 1000 baht.

For a single entry tourist visa the thai consulate in Vientiane is the easiest one to deal with. You can fly to Udon Thani and then take a mini van to the Nong Khai border and cross into Lao to go to the consulate to get the visa. It costs 1000baht for the single entry tourist visa at the thai consulate there.

thank you Tod, do I just walk in and tell them I want a single entry tourist visa? Is there anything extra I need to do, or know? How long does it take? I am sorry to ask so many questions, but I have never been to a consulate and I don't know what to expect.

for an ED visa you find a school, enroll, pay your tuition, get the documents from them, got to a thai consulate and get a 90 day single entry ED visa.

The schools that offer ED visas will tell you exactly how it's done. Start with them.

yes, I will look for a school that offers the ED visa, but I have to have at least 3 weeks left on the tourist visa to get the ED visa processed, so I am looking to try to get the 60 day to allow me more time to get that done
