TLDR : Answer Summary
The inquiry pertains to obtaining a student visa for a son currently in Thailand, specifically seeking advice on applying for the visa if he cannot travel to Malaysia. The comments suggest that his best options are to apply at the Thai consulate in Vientiane, Laos, or in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, highlighting that the university's visa section should also provide important guidance.

this isn't gonna turn into a which place is cheaper to get to sort of thread. ๐Ÿ˜•

It would appear your son has two choices; use the thai consulate in Vientiane Lao or Phnom Penh Cambodia.

Go to the websites read the processing times read if they need an appt, read the requirements, and then go to get the visa

South African passports can only go to Laos or Cambodia. It is not his decision though. His University will address his paperwork to a specific consulate as he is not going to a language center and is going to a university therefore he needs to go into his Uni and ask all these questions to the Visa section that deals with international students. They know the procedure. He needs to go and do the questioning there not on here all the time !

he did ask yesterday he was there I am just asking which country is cheaper to travel we know he can't go to Malaysia and adel is the only one that can assist him I am not there so is a bit stressful I am to far away

@Jeanette *******
I have told Adel he needs to go to Laos - he can go to Cambodia but that will depend on his University papers and again if he goes to Cambodia he needs to wait a minimum 5 working days before collecting his visa so definitely a more expensive option. His option is Laos and his University needs to tell him where but according to Mr. Daniels he only has one option which is Vientiene

&
@Jeanette *******
Savannakhet won't allow S/A passport holders to apply for visas there.

@Tod ********
yea for sure Vientiane is basically the only option now for SA passports. Really frustrating as a few years ago there were way more options. Just such an unlucky passport in general for any visa process in Thailand.

@Lisa **************
I honestly don't know why they lumped S/A into those "special processing time" countries ๐Ÿ˜• and believe right now the only nearby thai consulates are Savannakhet Lao, Phnom Penh Cambodia or maybe Yangon Burma,

That's why (at least up here in Bangkok) private schools and uniz are getting the initial 90 day Non-ED issued at Chaengwattana in country.
Lisa ***************
he needs to go to Bangkok from Hatyai and then get into a reputable visa run company van set up - that is my honest opinion and go from there. Meesuk or one of the visa run companies can help with the travel but he needs to have all documentation in place before he goes.

@Lisa **************
it's totally the students decision, you TELL the school what consulate you're going to use and they address the paperwork to that consulate

AND

South African passport holders can't use Savannakhet ONLY Vientiane Lao

@Tod ********
not the experience I had - my son's university told him where to go to - Penang was the closest yet he was sent to KL so I think you are mistaken ! This was for a proper University in Bangkok not a back alley language center. And NO the University did not say it is up to the student ! They specifically told him where to go with his British passport despite 2 previous ED visas for High School issued in Penang - so not the students choice necessarily !

@Lisa **************
and I think IF your son had told them WHERE he was going to go, they'd address the paperwork to that consulate.

People do it all the time at real uniz

The Uni can't dictate where you go, the student TELLS the uni where they're going and the uni writes the paperwork to that consulate

But that's neither here nor there as a South African can't go to ANY of the consulates in Malaysia without a 4 week processing.

They can walk in to Vientiane with an appt and get the visa back 2 working days after the day they apply for it
Lisa ***************
@Tod ********
do you really think we didn't tell them that ? Come on man ! We have lived here 7 years on visas ! We told them we were in Hatyai - they basically said NO - BUI uses KL and that is where he needs to go! You cannot assume every University will bow down to the student demanding where to go ! I mean this is Thailand
Lisa ***************
and FYI BUI is a proper University ! Bangkok University International in Rangsit before you comment that he isn't at a real uni ! LOL

@Lisa **************
easy now, dial back the rancor a notch or three.

I'm just stating what I have seen happen time and again with possibly hundreds of foreign students who go out of the country to get ED visas, both from private schools and from "real" unis.

Students tell the school where they're going and the paperwork is addressed to that consulate. Years ago it used to be just "ATTN Thai Embassy" headered but now most consulates require it be addressed to that specific consulate.

They're holding a S/A passport and if they want to get an ED visa in Lao they go to Vientiane. Or as you mentioned the thai consulate in Phnom Penh which has a 5 working day processing time not including the day you apply for the visa (so you're in Cambodia a minimum of a week)
Tod *********
If they can't get it issued inside thailand at the immigration office where they live with documentation from the school the ONLY consulate in Lao that will let South African passport holders apply without a 4 week wait is the thai consulate in Vientiane Lao

They will let S/A passport holders apply for visas, but you do need to make an appt at the embassy website to get in the gate to apply AND they have a 3 working day processing (ex; apply monday morning, get the passport back wednesday afternoon, apply friday morning, get the passport back the following tuesday afternoon)
