What are my options for staying in Thailand after my ED visa if I cannot continue studying?

Need advice. Our Thai language school just did our 90 extentions and were told we have to leave in 8 weeks because we have been here for a total time of one year.

My wife and I entered Thailand in January on a 60 day tourist visa which we extended 30 days. Then visa amnesty started and in August we decided to change our visa to an ED Visa. The school said we would be able to stay an additional 9 months (the end of April).

Today we were notified of our required departure in January and the school seemed like they did not expect this either. They even offered a refund of the 4 months we cannot use.

We don’t want to leave and even if we do I don’t know if or how we can get back in. School said possibly a volunteer visa, but wouldn’t that have the same issue of us being in country 1 year? Suggestions.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user shared their predicament about needing to leave Thailand after being notified by their language school that their ED visa would not allow for further extensions beyond one year. Despite initially being told by the school that they could stay until the end of April, the user faces an imminent departure in January and is exploring alternatives to remain in the country. Community members provided various suggestions including enrolling in a master’s program, considering the volunteer visa, discussing the situation with the language school, and visiting immigration to clarify their options. Some users expressed concerns about the school's credibility and shared their own visa experiences, especially amidst changing regulations due to COVID-19.

My Volunteer visa is good 15 months, so definitely no 1 year rule. Its a shady sort of thing so not entirely recommended. I have been here a few years mostly on tourist visas. I think there are options for you. Ready to be a teacher?

Just to say my story if it can help. I'm studying in a private school. Really study means at least 8 hours a week, sometimes more. My school is one of the most famous and one of the most expensive (language Express at Mo Chit) My study should normally end up in the end of December (paid 55k for 14 months). I normally had to go out of country in June to extend my visa but can't... Since then no matter how much I insisted to the school or to the immigration I'm considered as a guy who entered the country with a tourist visa or just a stamp... I even brought a letter from my embassy asking the immigration to let me stay in the country to finish my studies. No effect or no more than any other embassy letter from people who are in a tourist visa. Therefore the school was closed during an extended time so I have a bunch of hours left that I can't even use and because i stopped study too. All the schedule change because of covid. and it's now quite difficult to go to the class for me. Therefore the school what not helpful, just extended me to March for the time the school was closed but no visa so... So my advice for you is just... Good luck... And for those who think to get an ED visa in these unsure times I would say don't expect much.... And if you can pay in several times just in case something happen. Too much people use these visa just to be in Thailand ad never go to school....i guess everybody put you in this same basket. No matter if you study or not.

I was on an ed visa. My school offered another year to me when it was coming to en end. I decided to go with a retirement visa instead.

Sounds like your school is the weak link.

First, are you actually going to registered language school and learning Thai, or did you use some agent to get the ED extension, and are not actually going to school?

going to school twice a week two hours each time. Yes it is a reputable school.

, if you are in a program that has at least 160 hours of instruction for the year, you should be able to keep getting 90 day extensions for 3 years, with a simple verbal language test by an immigration officer after your first year. With all the people getting 1 year ED visa extensions and not actually going to school, as a way to stay in Thailand long term, they could very easily be cracking down on ED extensions. You should have been doing the 90 extensions yourself. You can ask for a review of your situation, as you are going to school, but, if that school has been selling ED extensions on the side, you might be out of luck with that school, as for immigration to cancel any extension from them, something is up, and not right with them in immigration's mind. You might try going to a different school before January, and pay for another year of classes.

thanks for the advice. Tomorrow I will go to the school again and talk with them. And then probably head to immigration to see if I can get it sorted.

dress respectful as well no singlets or shorts.

, one thing to remember when you go to immigration, and if you can speak some Thai. Do not talk bar room Thai to them. Speak formal Thai, as that should be what you are learning in school. Try to speak as much formal Thai as you can to them, as it can make a big difference.

very good point

Your school seems to be a bit ignorant or messed something up. AFAIK you get 3 months on arrival with edu visa then 3 extensions every 3 months resulting in 4 stamps and total 1 year of studying visa. AFAIK even after the year passes some schools can enroll you for next year without you having to leave the country (since few months ago)

The visa stuff always changes here and legality is always in various forms of gray because everyone's lost.

I heard the opposite, that since the pandemic started it became impossible to do a 2nd year of ED visa without leaving the country to apply, at great risk and expense (both financial and mental health, for back to back fornights of isolated quarantine)

where are u ?BKK? I am the ED visa too and had successfully extended it more 90days already in CM.

I think maybe u should give more pressure to the language school.I read a news that some language school cheated foreigners that they can extend one year but didn't do it.may be it is a trick

If you want to stay here longer and continue studying, it would probably be better to enroll in a masters degree at a university. Volunteer visas are for volunteers, which is something completely different.

Actually Thai language visa is able to extend 3 more times in every 3 months.

Im quite not sure that I understand your situation correctly. But feel that something wrong with you.

However, right now you are able to extend 60 days Covid visa with no required Embassy letter. Let do that first to avoid overstay then find another option later.

i have a new ed visa that will expire in December (i applied 3 months in September) is it possible then to get a covid extension of 60 days before my ed expires?
Bo ***********
@Mariana *********
Youcan extend Covid visa 45 days before ed visa expire ka.

@Bo **********
i called phuket immigration today and they advised me to cancel my ed visa in order to apply for the covid visa, or just go on the last day of my visa which sounds really risk either way! How can i find the right information and does it depends on the immigration? Would it be possible to go to another immigration exemple bangkok?
Bo ***********
@Mariana *********
They will do the same. PM me for the photo of your passport and visa for further advise.
Mariana **********
@Bo **********
thank you so much for the info bo, but do you know if they extend for 30 or 60 days in this case? And do you know if it starts counting from the date it expires or another date?
Bo ***********
@Mariana *********
Will start from the cutting date fo your ED visa ka.

that is what we were told in the beginning. This was our first extension, the school handled it. Do you think I should go to immigration and talk with them directly?

@Joseph *******
You are able to do Covid visa one more time with no required Embassy letter. You will get 60 days visa this time.
