Hello all,

I am flying to Thailand on September 23rd. I do not have a ticket exiting Thailand. I plan on teaching and being in Thailand for at least six months. I hope to receive a work permit through a school or hopefully get sponsored by a school for the work visa. Is there an option for me to get a visa without them asking for an outward ticket? What are the best options/ things that have worked for anyone in the past? Any insight would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual is seeking advice on obtaining a visa to teach in Thailand for at least six months without an exit ticket on hand. The discussion highlights the requirement for an exit ticket to enter Thailand, and suggests getting a tourist visa first, which allows for an initial stay of 60 days, extendable by 30 days. For teaching, they will need a Non-Immigrant B visa and a work permit, which typically requires documentation from an employer in Thailand. Finding employment before arrival might streamline the visa process.

and I now believe that
@Je***
has more than enough information to be thoroughly confused by now. I think we're done.

Good Luck, (snap up a tourist visa before you wing your way here)

They will not let you in without a exit ticket,

maybe it's just me I am retired from health care and I lived on a sailboat for 12 years. I believe in redundancy, and my backup plan has a back up plan. I came here knowing I was staying with a return ticket I just let go .

@Thomas ****
I think you're right, it's totally luck of the draw. You get a cranky officer and they can put you thru the ringer IF they want to.
Thomas *****
really depends on who you get and what kind of night they are having.

@Robert ******
not talking about you sir...
Thomas *****
when I went passport control they wanted to see my ticket

@Thomas ****
I came here to Thailand on a one way ticket. Not been asked for onward travel, departure card I got inside the plane, And maybe I'm a fool to spent my time in Thailand, but who is to judge.

@Thomas ****
who asked you? the officer at passport control when you stamped into the country? the arrival departure card is handed out to EVERYONE on the plane you can just leave the departure side of it blank. .

It's the airline that has the problem NOT passport control.
Thomas *****
true they may not let you board. i am looking at tickets now for a short trip home and one way are not that much cheaper then round trip
Thomas *****
Asked me. And you need it so they can give you a departure card that you need to have stapled inside your passport so you can get your first extension. we will see. and why would any fool come here without a way home no job no job offer. This is why visa control is so strict here. idiots like this end up sleeping on the beach and begging for change
Tod *********
that is not correct :/ Once you get on the airplane bringing you here few if any people are ever asked by passport control when stamping in for proof of onward travel. TRUE it is a requirement IF you're asked but they almost never ask.

It's way more likely the airline you're comin' here on will not let you board the plane without a ticket out of thailand IF you're flying here without having bought a visa from the thai consulate beforehand.

Hang about everyone, :O At this time the O/P has NO job lined up, no employer to write a letter or provide documentation for their Non-B visa or their work permit.

Let's concentrate on what the O/P can do to get here trouble free and to stay here long enough to find a job. Offering out this and that suggestion is just pissing in the wind seeing as they have NO job lined up at this time.

I would say

, seeing as you do NOT have a job lined up here that the least you should do is get a single entry tourist visa from a thai consulate in your country before you wing your way here.

That serves a couple purposes,

#1 - it makes the airline you're flying in on NOT ask you for proof of onward travel when you check in

#2 - it gets you stamped into thailand for 60 days so you'll have enough time to look for work.

AND you can extend that 60 day stamp by 30 days for 1900baht at the immigration office giving you a total of 90 days in country. That should be enough for you to find a job and get the company to give you paperwork so you can go to a thai consulate in a nearby country and get a 90 day single entry Non-B visa.

A bachelor degree is needed to teach in Thailand. The TEFL is not needed tho. The university degree can be in anything, doesn't have to be education. I've seen people work without university degree but they get paid less.and i'm not sure they are *legally* working.

There is a woman from Cameroon teaching english to seven grade kids not far from where we live. Her accent is out of this world and the kids don't understand much, some parents complain, etc, but they are in need of teacher in some of Issan province so if u are looking to teach english there they need teacher.

Can you record few words in her accent and inbox it to me? Want to listen ๐Ÿคฃ

Your best bet would be to try and secure a job at an international school before you arrive in Thailand. Most such schools recruit overseas. Then they will provide you with the visa etc.

You can apply for a non Iimmigrant b 90 day visa from your own country under the appropriate work category, you can then Come to Thailand and once you have a work permit (normally assisted by an employer as you need to have a contract of employment, you then can extend your stay for 1 year (not a visa it is an extension of your non b 90 day visa) again the school should assist with that.

@Ellie ******
I would assume the person would call or email to check, as it's always a good thing to do first ๐Ÿ˜Š

Of course it's depends on your local Thai consulate, but the invitation letter form your (future) employer or receipt of WP application is required to apply non B at many Thai consulate...
Robert *******
You need two different things to teach in Thailand. The Non Immigrant B visa to stay inside Thailand and the Work Permit to work in Thailand. Both you get with documents supplied by your employer. There is no such thing as a work visa.

Try checking here for teaching jobs...
