My work permit will be cancelled on the 31st December following redundancy.

My passport has a multiple entry stamp until July but I understand this will be cancelled too and I’ll have 7 days to leave the country after the WP is cancelled.

What is the simplest/most cost effective way to leave and re-enter while I continue to job hunt?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is facing cancellation of their work permit and is seeking the most simple and cost-effective means to leave and re-enter Thailand while job hunting. Various suggestions have been provided, including changing to a retirement visa to allow for job searching, taking short trips to countries like Cambodia or Laos to extend their stay, and the need to prepare for potential complications regarding re-entry after having held a work permit.

Visit the Philippines, check out it's 3 main cities, then will let you extend tourist exception for 3 years, so you can stay there and spend money

Be aware and inform yourself properly that you’ll get in back with the tourist visa or if they wanna see a Non B. I am in exactly this situation right now. Stuck in Malaysia, waiting for a NonB visa although the papers for my new work permit were already prepared. Didn’t get an interview or anything, just denied. I even informed myself when I was in Europe 6 weeks ago what’s best and got the information from the embassy, that it shall be easy with the tourist visa, just to enter to finalise the paperwork. Now I’ve learned that, after you had a work permit already, they assume you wanna come back for business related reasons and don’t give you the tourist visa.

Or be prepared with a ticket out after 7 weeks and hope you’ll get an easy person at the immigration who believe you come back as a tourist.

Happened to two other friends too.

Please inform yourself in advance properly and be aware that you need to leave the country to apply for a non B visa. And that this can take up to 4 weeks, depending of your lawyer and how fast he gets your required documents done. I hope everything will run smooth for you.

Depends on your nationality. I went to KL after my visa finished and came back on visa free 60 days. Plus 30 extension if heeded. Nationality can be checked on govt website

You had a work permit and 12month visa before?
Kirsten *********
I did that after my work permit and annual exit re-entry ended. I also did it after my retirement permit and annual exit re-entry. Only comment coming back in was 'you have no more visa now'

Change to a retirement visa if you can. This way you can search for a new job without having to leave all the time

cannot work on a retirement visa.

of course not. You'll have to switch it over to a non-b afterwards once he finds another sponsor. Can't work with the stamp on arrival either

Border bounce or border run

@Frankie ******
Not correct. If entering visa exempt you get 60 days.

all Visa Exmpt entries are 60 days

Is this because he is cancelling a work permit or because he's from a country that doesn't give the 60 days?

I haven’t cancelled the WP. The company I was working for have made everyone redundant.

I was more wondering why the guy thought you would only get 30 days on re-entry. When my son was made redundant due to covid the company actually didn't close his work permit to allow him time to find alternative work which worked out well as it picked up again and they just restarted him as though nothing happened. Hopefully you get sorted again soon.

reckon it’s feasible to do a road trip and drive it? Can you cross the border in your car?

Appreciate it’s a long drive but splitting it up into blocks and maybe seeing some of the country on the way.

You will have 24h to leave. If you want that 7 days will cost you 1.9k baht

my HR department said it’s 7 days to leave after redundancy.

@Mark *****
it depends on the agreement with your company. Here’s what I have agreed (photo). My WP was cancelled on the the 4th, but the date of the leaving was indicated as 10th as per an agreement with an employer. Yesterday on the 6th I did a border run to switch to a tourist visa and did not pay any penalties.

@Mark *****
it is. That is the grace period 👍🏼

@Mark *****
Your HR department is wrong. If you have an extension based on employment (rather than the initial Non B visa) the reason for the extension stops the moment your work ceases. You’d need to leave that day.

You can organise stuff if your employer agrees so that you can get a letter from them that you’ll be finishing on X date (usually 7 or so days). You go to the labour department to cancel your work permit and then immediately go to immigration to cancel your extension and they’ll give you a stamp to stay until X date.

If that doesn’t happen then when your work permit ceases you go to immigration and apply for an extension - which will be rejected and they’d give you 7 days to leave Thailand. It’s not an automatic thing. You apply and get refused for 1,900 baht but you get your 7 days to leave.
Divya **********
@Mark *****
That's incorrect. As soon your work permit is cancelled, you are essentially overstaying. You need to get out of the country within 24 hours. If you don't want to, you can visit the immigration office on 31st and get yourself 7 days extension for 1.9K baht.

But why would you do all that. Just do a border run.
