TLDR : Answer Summary
When entering Thailand, you may be asked to show proof of funds, specifically 20,000 THB in cash or its equivalent in foreign currency. This requirement is rarely enforced, and most travelers report never being asked to provide this proof. In instances where it is requested, it must be in cash; bank statements or credit cards will not suffice.

I was asked about 3 months ago. I showed the IO 300 GBP and 300 USD. They amount you need to show if they ask you, which is very rare, is the equivalent of 20,000 Thai Baht.

Yes, about AUD 1,000. Not a great amount for a holiday. I know some don't like to carry a lot of cash on them, so maybe access to an ATM would work, but as you said, it's usually just a simple excuse to deny entry.

@Lloyd ********
well if coming by plane not sure there are ATM'S before passport control. Definitely bureau de change. I'd be careful and bring the required amount in cash.
Lloyd *********
@Alfred **********
yes, there aren't any ATM's before immigration, that's why I said it would solve the issue of not having 20,000 baht, but that's not the real reason they want to deny entry .
Alfred ***********
@Lloyd ********
what do you believe is the real reason then?
Joe **********
Bank is not sufficient. In cash in any currency only
Steve *******
If they ask, which is very rare, it's 20,000 baht cash and cash only.
David ********
Never been asked.

You drunk or what ? I have go out and in to thailand 2 times a year since 2004 never heard or been asking abouth that
Frank *****
@Jan **************
they usually don't ask, but if they don't like the looks of you, they can. it's a rule, and it is cash in pocket...
Rob **********
Immigration rarely asks for it at all, but if asked you must show 20,000 baht in cash or the equivalent in foreign currency, not your bank account, credit cards etc, must be cash. But 99% of the time it is not even asked for.

The fact that many responders have not been asked is irrelevant to the fact that an individual entering on a tourism entry stamp can be asked to show the equivalent of 20,000B cash, that's the law.

@Graham *****
what’s a tourism entry stamp?
Graham ******
@Jack *******
Visa Exempt or Tourist Visa

@Graham *****
so know you’re making up your own terminology?
Graham ******
@Jack *******
check the Royal Gazette which gives details of the Immigration Act and the requirements for tourism entries :)
Jack ********
@Graham *****
no such terminology stop making things up
Graham ******
@Jack *******
So what's this then?
Jack ********
@Graham *****
something made up by Ellie. It’s not an official document.
Graham ******
@Jack *******
so Ellie is making up terminology too ;)

I've been going for twice a year for 35 years and never been asked once

In over 20 yrs visiting LOS a minimum of 3 times a yr I have never been asked to show proof of cash. I think that would be a path the IO would go down if he was building a case for other reasons to refuse you entry. Same as a forwarding flight, never been asked for proof of that either.
John ****
I’ve never been asked in 25 years
William ***********
20k might get you in but realistically you should stay home if that’s a struggle to prove.

I was asked once at the Rayong border in Myanmar. But I just pulled out my cash. And they didn't count it and were like eh ok fine.
Torben *********
@Cris *****
yes they do over the bridge to casino
Jack ********
@Cris *****
Rayong doesn’t have a border with Myanmar
Nigel *********
@Jack *******
probably means ranong
Cris ******
@Nigel ********
yep. Sorry
Nigel *********
@Cris *****
And yes. Anyone going theough that border will have to use one of the agents ( imigration will direct you) or have All the requirements whatever visa you have. As im sure you found out already.
Cris ******
@Nigel ********
ya. This was a while ago. The funny part though was some Russian dude in front of me had like 15 border bounce stamps and the IO was not having it. But after going into the office. He was allowed back in haha.
Alfred ***********
@Cris *****
it's called a small brown envelope of cash where I come from lol
Cris ******
@Alfred **********
oh I know. Haha.
Gary **********
Got be cash if asked
Driss *********
I always bring at least €600 in cash just in case, was asked years ago but it's very rare
Stephen *********
No idea never been asked and I live here in and out frequently
Stuart *********
@Stephen ********
The fact that you’ve never been asked is pretty irrelevant to the OPs question. Most people aren’t asked. Some are. If asked it needs to be in cash. 20k Thai baht or equivalent.
Stephen *********
@Stuart ********
o yes your correct I remember now
Andy ************
@Stephen ********
It's a tourist requirement
Stuart *********
IF asked to show amount (very few are asked) it would need to be 20,000 baht or equivalent in cash only. A bank account or credit card statement doesn’t suffice.

Cash amount is incredibly rarely asked for. The law exists that they can ask but they’ll only invoke the rule if they’re looking for a reason to deny you entry. For 99.9% of people that won’t happen.
