A close friend of mine (South African) was just denied his ed visa in Laos. The reason they gave him was "they don't trust him" and told him to apply in his home country.. looking for an alternate solution.. has anyone else faced this issue and found another solution? Thanx

TLDR : Answer Summary
A South African expat recently faced denial of an education (ED) visa while applying in Laos, with reasons attributed to a lack of trust from the consulate. The expat is seeking advice on alternative solutions or embassies that may accept his application, given his previous visa history and continued ties to Thailand. Community comments have highlighted the importance of a strong visa application and the potential implications of previous visa types.

On special request of Greg Boudah, who has very special information and will tell us all how to solve this problem, the topic is open for his comments. Thanks in advance for sharing Greg. EDIT: And all for nothing, Greg did not have any visa advice, only advice about the Pattaya crowd, which has not much to do with Thai visa. And as he could not find the I leave group button, I gave him a helpful hand. Good luck.

living and working for over 4 years inside Thailand without any intention to learn Thai language and now when your tourist visa and visa exempt options run out, you love to learn and for sure you will and are the genuine student and the visa is just a bonus like the cherry on the cake. There is not much to advice. People come to Thailand to learn Thai language, not live here for years without any interest in Thai language and when the cheap possibilities for visa are over, get the ED visa as the less expensive one. Get the visa that fits your purpose of stay.

I can not give a solution, but the visa history pretty much is the explanation for denial. All places are critical with ED applications, especially from informal schools. Why not sign up at a real College? OP also did not explain if he got VOID stamp and just refuse to accept his application.

We are seeing more and more rejections of ED visas after people have been in thailand for a while on other entry stamps.

How long was your 'friend' staying in thailand BEFORE they decided to switch to an ED visa?

Which Consulate in Laos?

Let's see... he's South African:

1. Since he's going to a language school, what embassy did they recommend him going to? Do they know he just got rejected at Laos?

2. What's his prior visa history? Does he seem like he's living here, or is he actually wanting to learn the language?

Just a They do not trust him, or did he has by any chance some stamps in his passport that indicate he visited Thailand before?

Hello Ricki. Do you have a void ED stamp, or did the consulate just reject the application (i.e "no we don't want to see that application, please leave")

hi Robert. This post is about me ( Austin posting on my behalf as I was waiting to be accepted to the group). I have been working in Thailand for about 3 years on a non B visa. This came to an end at the beginning of this year. I have been coming in and out of Thailand since then on a tourist visa as my life is still very much in Thailand. I have never overstayed and I travel frequently (so I haven’t abused the tourist visa). Yes I do want to continue to live in Thailand as I still have a life here, but I also genuinely want to improve my thai and so I thought the best option would be a ED visa. Having been denied in Laos, What I really need to know, is do I have an alternative embassy in Asia that will accept my application? Flying back to South Africa is an expensive risk for me (especially if I fly all that way and get denied there). Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Obvious he is living in Thailand and now trying to use the Non Immigrant ED visa for it. I have no idea in which country in this region he will get this visa. I can only guess and that is not really helpful. Let's wait for some other comments, hopefully with some more suggestions.

He states "yeah, Ive had a non B visa before and have tourist stamps. Not sure if that's what you are referring too." Are there other embassies that are more open to accepting him? If he was denied in laos why wouldn't he be denied in his home country? Sorry if that's a silly question but I don't know..
